My son was recruited by a low level D3 team at a HS playoff game. Other than that I did not often see college coaches at HS games. His DAP team, however had 4/5 coaches trolling the sideline at any given time. I will admit that I think these college coaches came to these games because it was an easy way to see a whole mess of quality players at one time. I know that is the past most college players came out of HS, and I think that is still the case...but there seems to be a definite shift in D1 programs scouting primarily DAP squads. I am including low level D1 teams as well.

From following a good boys d1 team that plays mostly d1 opponents, there are very few college coaches at HS games. First, the HS season is when they are coaching their own team. Two, they know that HS competition is not as stiff as club, so watching a club game is more relevant. And at a high level tournament, watching club is more efficient. So while college coaches are rare at HS games, they are there on occasion. It was always to see a player they already knew about, to my knowledge.

2) Does playing certain positions get more of a look than others.
3) In the same vein as question 2, is it better to be a solid all-around player.

How do you know they are a college coach?
Do they wear signs, name badges? Clipboards?
Do they watch the match with their arms crossed?

Easier in the NE with a zillion schools within a short driving distance. But if that isn't what your player is interested in you are SOL without club showcases.
A big misperception out there is that coaches use showcases to find players when that is not really how it works. It is not the first step of the process. You have to get them interested before they are going to come to see player play. 99% of the players that coaches go to see at showcases have contacted them to express interest in their program and the college coach has developed some information (ie a referral or seen a resume) that leads them to believe that they might be able to play for their program. They don't go to showcases on fishing trips any more than they would go fishing at a high school game.
You all really need to envision recruiting more like a job search process. When a coach comes to watch a player that is more like more like the interview. There will have been barriers that the player will have had to go through before they even get to this stage. If a coach is interested in a player there is a dialogue that goes on with them where these sorts of things get worked out quite easily. The coach might even just come to practice if that is what works. If a coach can find the time during a season to go see a prospect in their back yard, it only makes sense for them to do that because it frees up time later on to look at other prospects that a showcase might be the only shot at watching them play.

A bit surprised if took you 17 minutes to respond. You must have stepped away from hitting F5 to take a break.
