    Ignoring the issue?

Interesting angle on the NFL abuse case scandal - Hope Solo continues to play. Is it because it's soccer and fewer people care? Or because she's a woman and no one thinks a woman is capable of committing abuse?

My opinion - it is because she's a woman, its women's soccer, and it didn't happen right in the middle of all of this commotion.

Hope is roughly the same size as her sister and/or her 17 year nephew. That was more of a melee than it was a domestic violence issue where someone is bullied and beaten by someone 3 times larger and infinitely stronger than the victim.

This is not analogous at all. This is more like when a player goes to a bar and gets in a scuffle. NYT is way off base on this one.

It is similar to the NFL in some ways - she's a star, she's bankable, she puts )sme_buts in the seats. It's all about the money....

Another poster above got it right. This was melee, not domestic violence.

Domestic violence is physical abuse of someone essentially weaker than another. A man over a woman, an adult over a child, an adult over an elderly person, an adult over a physically or mentally impaired person. By the definition the NYT is using, two brothers squabbling over the TV remote would be domestic violence.

How about a professional athlete punching a seventeen year old

Exactly. And getting into drunken brawls with family members. This wasn't her first run in with the law either.

All of the leagues are going to/are currently having to grapple with the issue of what is a punishable offense and what isn't. It isn't easy - do you punish a player for ANY arrest? Only felonies? Do you wait until a conviction (which can take years)? The public is tired of thugs being held to a different standard and being made heros on the field. The leagues and teams have billions on the line

Just like with the NFL, women's soccer is trying to sweep this under the rug. Both leagues hoped that it would go away.

In the NFLs case it backfired but women's soccer has yet to have a dramatic affect. This is due to the double standard, no video and that Women's soccer is not on the radar screen

All of it brings up the issue of the hero-role athletes play in our society and to what standards should they be held accountable. When an actor or performer (also often 'role models") does something bad he/she stops getting jobs until they can prove they are worth the risk. When an athlete does the same thing he/she keeps getting paid and keeps playing.

The difference is that an actor is an independent contractor whom can't get insurance coverage ... The athlete is often a key employee of a multi billion dollar company who is guarantee payment.

                          It's all about the Benjamins
