Parents who've gone through the recruiting grind before. My kid plays on an ECNL team. Starter and top half of team (but not top 3). She's reached out to invite coaches to come watch games at showcases. Some have come, some haven't, but really, who knows if they showed up to see my kid or someone else. No one has reached out to her coach (although, with new rules, maybe that's not permitted). Just keep moving forward with this approach or do you read into it that she's over shooting on the level of school (and to be clear, it's D1 but not top D1)? Her club coaches are giving some guidance on types of schools to target, but not much more. Should she keep pursuing them, go to camps, etc.?
    Thoughts?

The coaches get around the rules by inviting you to their camps. Wink Wink... We like you but can't tell you that but if you give us some money we will be able to see if we really love you. Then when we can talk we'll already know if you're really good and have a fat wallet at the same time.

How old is she? That matters with the new rules. Also, if she's on the younger side the programs may not be heavily targeting her class yet. Best bet is to have your club contact them and do some fishing around. Your club they may have not been 100% on point with what programs to target, or again, it could be timing etc. I wouldn't go to camps until you get a better sense if there's genuine interest (and that doesn't mean a generic camp invite). Only exception would be if it's a school she REALLY wants and the camp seems to be her only shot.

Assuming the 1-2 classes ahead of her had similarly talented teams: where have the 5-9 kids committed to college from those classes? There's so much variability from family to family and so much of college choice is personal, but if you look at the teams ahead of your daughter you might find a couple of kids that might be decent benchmarks. If those kids seem to be ending up at D2 schools or at teams near the bottom of America East, CAA or the Northeast conferences - and your daughter is targeting the Big10 or SEC - that might give you a hint of an answer. Maybe ask the club coach to identify a few former players that he would compare your daughter to, and see where they ended up. Also, carefully check the rosters of the programs you're targeting and really try to see where the majority of their recruits are coming from. Sure, there's lots of silly BS in those player Bios, but you might be able to confirm a suspicion as to whether you and your player are targeting the right level.

BTW - we did all of these things (and got plenty of other, more standard feedback) during the early stages of the recruiting process, and we ended up changing the target level for our player - in terms of what kind of program she might be able to contribute to. It worked well for her. Good luck.

Thank you. Different poster but appreciate the solid advice.

You should always check the rosters of any program you're interested in. Actually not just rosters but player stats as well. It's one thing to have a shot at being on the roster, another to playing meaningful minutes. What are the backgrounds of the starters? Are there a good number of international players? If they have impressive resumes and you're stretching yours, you should probably go down a notch in targeting.

Thanks. OP here. D is a 2022. Had her go through all the rosters of schools she might want to attend and see if she thinks she's in the range of what they are recruiting. As earlier poster said, some of these bios are tough to work through with all the fluff.

I guess the biggest head scratcher is whether, with the new rules, we should be shelling out for camps this summer without really knowing if my kid has a chance. She's gotten a few personalized invitations to camps, but for other schools, without that, not sure I want to burn more dollars on something with no future.

For DII schools - can a Sophomore / Freshman still call a coach and speak with them if they pick up the phone? Not sure if that is part of the rules for DII like it is DI now where they can't.

She's on the young sided still for what said was mid level. Maybe do 1-2 this summer at a school she's less interested in but is at a level you've been targeting. She can see where she stacks up and if she's aiming too high. It would also give her some good experience for next year. Pick one day events that don't require any real travel so you're not shelling out too much.

Same rules apply any time there is athletic money involved
