1) They need to get better at passing from the back. Their defenders are good at winning the ball (tackles, ball in the air) but when they have the ball they make bad decisions like passing to a crowded area when the other side of the field has much more space. So they end up losing the ball and spend more time defending than distributing the ball in a smart way to create more attacking opportunities.
2) Midfielders need to be smarter: Some of their midfielders turn and pass back too much when there are forward options where they are facing!
3) They play a 4-3-3 but in reality it's a 4-3-1 (they don't make enough use of the wide forwards) and rely too much on the striker who has trouble finishing.
I wish them good luck.

The academies follow what US soccer mandates. They want players to practice more and have less but more competitive games. They also want the kids to have time to recover after games. Prevents injuries from over use.
The college game is horrible for the most part. A lot of big fast players playing kick ball at almost every level.
My guess is that your son plays for Valeo who believe that the kids need to play in every tournament and almost every day. These kids have a good chance for injury and burn out. IMO

Not that I put much faith in rankings, but the rankings are not dependent on the leagues in which the teams play. That is to say that ranked teams are from a variety of leagues.

Just a coach who checked out a couple of their games last season.
