You forgot to add hemorrhaging $$$$. Starting a youth program isn't exactly at the top of their priority list.

that's def what CT needs, another club where all the best players can get the best training and pay the best overinflated prices

          Hartford

They may be focusing on trying to turn a profit first. I that doesn't happen within another year or two they wont exist anymore.

USL is pushing all league members to start Academy teams. Hartford hand may be forced.

Hopefully they'd have the good sense to 1) not force it on a new club trying to get off the ground 2) allow them to charge for teams, even if its just to get to break even. Even MLS isn't happy about having to run free youth teams

Looks like USL is putting some real effort to get an academy league off the ground. Leaving the economics aside, Hartford Athletic merging with Oakwood seems to make a lot of sense from a soccer standpoint.

As we have seen, MLS teams are pushing non-MLS academies to a second tier. OW and HA merger will make both stronger.

It would help OW for sure because non MLS clubs are getting pushed out. Without MLS in the system DA just becomes another league with more restrictions. But that assumes Hartford can make it. Remember Elm City? They did very well year 1 and were gone the next. CT is a tough place to do business.

They are putting real effort or real money??? Big difference. Yes, OW merger would HA would be much stronger than their relationship with USSF!! Who makes this stuff up?! HA is a very low level semi-pro team .... really low level. They have no clout anywhere and they certainly have no money. Who is going to coach the academy teams for free? Santa, the Easter Bunny? Where are they going to get decent coaches that would surpass the garbage clubs that are out there now? for free? Which players are going to jump ship from their current clubs (namely DA and ECNL larger clubs) to make that team elite? They would be the CFC branch or Simmons level club. C'mon, seriously ... think. We have too many teams already in a small state. The last thing we need is another C or D level club that has no capital or vision (doing it because they have been mandated too). Would by like Revs .... just throw something out as cheaply as possible.

Not the poster but you need to look down the road a few years from now. Most likely MLS is pulling out of DA. They practically are out now with A and B divisions for certain age groups. That greatly weakens the DA proposition for whoever is left - clubs like OW or BS. You're no longer playing pro teams and you're more like ECNL but can't play HS. MLS clubs will line up with USL as a farm team/youth program system. Granted Hartford may not make it that long, but the writing is on the wall for clubs like OW. they need to plan ahead.

So, both sides have to take on enormous risk (OW to leave DA without confirmation, and HA to borrow and spend money they dont have). Good luck with that. The more likely scenario is that HA will not be in existence in a few years which might be sped up by a year or two of additional spending .... and RD and DF relinquish power to anyone? No chance.

Look it may or may not happen. It makes sense on paper only at this point. HA definitely has some huge issues to sort through (like keeping the doors open). But there will be a big shift coming with BDA. As it is many families are not happy that the MLS clubs are largely out of regular competition. Clubs better have alternative plans.

Or they cash out and retire, or start another club.
