Transfer rates are very high for a variety of reasons. Often big programs will take on 12-15 recruits the first year giving most of them low percentages knowing that several will cut it.
All sports scholarships in the Power 5 conferences must guarantee scholarship amounts (they can go up but not down) all 4 years so losing scholarship money isn’t an issue. Power 5 coaches don’t have to play a player though so many transfer when they realize they won’t get any or much playing time ever. Many other players don’t care and stay anyway. Choice is up to the player. Now if you’re at a school like Duke or UVA and you don’t play but have a scholarship, you’re more tempted to stay for the academics.
