The criticism of the coach is not for failing to know the grades. It's about communication, standards and being proactive. The kids should know their status, grades or otherwise. Coaches should be communicating with players at least generally in a way that sets a tone and culture, academics, alcohol, and other obligations, and the coach and AD should be on that same page as well. Again, ignorance was not an excuse here for anyone.

      Hey Ludlow!!,
Wake up!! This may come as a big surprise to all of you but the AD's job description has more to it than taking care of the boys HS soccer team. One mistake with one team of the many he looks after shouldn't cost him his job. You guys are worse than the Friday Night Lights football crowd in Texas.
Bottom line is that the ineligible player had a family and the responsibility for monitoring their child's academic progress and athletic eligibility lies solely with them. Stop blaming the coach for failing to act like the kid's parent; he's' got plenty of other things to do.

But as others have also pointed out, many families are either clueless about these issue or simply don't give a cr*p. Do yo really think a family - especially fi they are jerks - are going to go to a coach and tell him Jimmy is failing three of his classes and rocking D's in the others? There needs to be checks along the way.

hence why the penalty should remain. Maybe it will alert some to the importance of academics.

Parents often over estimate the importance of athletics in these types of situations. They are an after school activity that are a privilege to participate in. When you start hearing calls to bend or "reinterpret" rules so teams can win championships that is when you know that the situation is out of balance.

Sad part is they learn from the NCAA, NFL, NBA, and MLB. Unfortunately winning is everything and that is sad. Teach the kid a lesson now so when he goes into the real world he knows better. School is for shaping children for their future to think and make decisions. At home we teach them about life decisions and consequences. Unfortunately the role models and athletes of todays generation don't lead by example.

Clearly, there are very few people around here that have any idea what an AD does, and many of those that do may only know one from a very rich town or a private school. I love seeing how many people project their idealism onto something they know nothing about. It's like me complaining about the fact that "...those incompetent morons at MGH or Dana Farber haven't yet cured cancer." Get real.

Sorry pal, but your stupid analogy aside, you didn't quite grasp what was implied. The "**** happens" attitude is as inexcusable as the infraction itself. The phrase "you had one job" applies here. No, we're not talking rocket science, brain surgery...or curing cancer. We are talking about doing exactly the job prescribed to the person who signed on for it. But still there are people the outside tripping over the facts to find excuses. It's pathetic.

Eleven games. Not one or two. Weeks. Not days. So you get real.

Oh, boo hoo. What will you do now that the meaning of life is over?

You continue to miss the point that I'm not a parent of a player. I'm condemning the apologists involved with the program, including parents. The program deserves the penalty.

I heard the ineligible player was a transfer, which to me shows that the system or process in Ludlow is broken. Any time a kid transfers is a red flag and someone dropped the ball on this big time. The fact that it took almost the whole season to "find" it is alarming

How about punishing the kid, not the team. Don't hold the innocent accountable for the guilty. The kid and his family should have absolutely known he was not eligible. The athletic director failed also but it's not the teams fault. Don't allow the kid to participate in ANY athletics the remainder of his time in high school. No more sports for that kid, he needs to focus on school anyway. Valuable lesson learned. Allow the team to participate in playoffs. To the AD, another oversight like this and your done. everyone learns.

You would need to talk to MIAA and change the rules.

MIAA is the governing body. They also act as judge when violations occur. Could they not tailor a punishment such as above? Is there no discretion?
