Just trying to incite some response, they have nothing to do now that Honey BooBoo's been cancelled. I thought this thread would've had died by now.

A full 29 pages and 285 posts later, and finally this topic stalled. I'm the OP and I'd like to thank the TS community for validating my hypothesis through this informal experiment. I never thought it would garner this much attention. You surprised even me, which is difficult, since I've started some of the most vitriolic and contentious topics on TS in the last 4-5 years. Bravo for making a mountain out of a mole hill!

It is only mole hill because fools like you have ridiculous notions that athletic greatness is created by environmental factors which means that anyone's kid can achieve it if only their parents will pay the price to be in the "right" place along with the "right" coaches. This is the lie that all club soccer propaganda is built upon.

BTDT, weren't you enjoying your time away? I know I have. Let it go.

So it was a fiction which most of us knew all along. The pathetic "success" of the thread has nothing to do with your trickiness and everything to do with those who have agendas where they believe the stakes are so high that nothing can slide and no opportunity can slide even if the set-up is ludicrous.

But while you're in a confessional mood, what other "vitriolic and contentious topics" specifically have you started?

You definitely are pointing your gun at the wrong person. Your response pretty much proves that people will read into a post whatever biases they have and assign it to whomever believe represents the counter argument to it.

And this reply of yours only confirms that you were at least of one of two (or one of one) people trying to get this crap going again. Admit it, you got bored and couldn't live without it. Let's just be clear about who really couldn't live without it.

Silly you, the crap has never started and stopped. It has been constant.

At least this thread has some value. It is one of a small handful that actually explores why everyone might want to spend a small fortune on club soccer.

BTDT alert everyone. He's back, and feeling really good. Got 3 threads going again while he has the audacity to suggest we limit his insanity to one thread (the new one he started). Guess what? He wants to talk about NEFC and Stars SOME MORE.

Are you sure or are you just guessing?

Threads die naturally when no one wants to talk about topics. Any bets that Stars vs NEFC thread dies out quickly?

The Stars vs NEFC thread? LOL. Which one of the hundreds that BTDT started do you mean?

OP again, and I knew there would be some I told you so's from the know-it-alls. Still, they kept posting despite their certainty about the situation. Their desire to demonstrate above average situational awareness went a long way towards keeping this thread alive. I took them for granted and I was correct in doing so.

I also figured the BTDT & Perspective shadow boxing would take over at some point. Check. I have no idea if either actually posted here, but so many others appear to have access to IP addresses that I obviously do not. I can never keep straight which guy stands for which paradigm, but I can always count on the haters and relaters to hammer away at each other.

Some people offered real advice. They should be applauded because I could easily have been a clueless mom. I may be guilty of aggrandizement, but you never know what new parents may have rattling around inside their heads.

As for me, I've been called Perspective, BTDT, Angry Scorps Dad, Crazy NEFC dad, and the list goes on and on...... I'm none of those things. The frenzy that people here can get whipped into is truly impressive. I've never posted in the silly Felger thread, but I love the fact that my post here immediately transfers there and starts the machine again.

All in all this was fun to watch. Thanks.

                                How-to

Current D1 mens player here (Boston University). At 9 years old - I was still playing town (BAYS) soccer only! Didn't hit the club scene hard until U11 but my parents invested a LOT in one-on -one training (I'm a GK) and picked a very good MA club, not DAP. As for how to get recruited -
have a plan/start early - (you dont need to be emailing coaches until sophomore yr HS, but if you're in late junior year and haven't sent an email yet that pretty much takes D1 off the board). Take video, but only within the last two years. No college coach cares about what you did when you were younger than 14. They want to see 16, 17, 18yrs old. Don't make it too long, but if they ask for more, then go record an entire half. Build your soccer/academic resume and send it to people, which leads me to...

DO WELL IN SCHOOL - this is a kicker, I had many teammates/acquaintances that fell by the wayside because they couldn't get into school. some even got d1 offers but couldn't get through admissions, which is the worst reason for not being able to play.

Club v DAP - I have a bias against the DA, because I loved high school soccer for its camaraderie and friendships. Recently though, it's become near impossible for club players to make D1. Out of my recruiting class, 10/13 players came from DA, 1 came from to-tier icelandic club, 1 from West Coast FC (3-time USYSA National Champion) and 1 (myself) from a "normal" club. I'm very lucky to have been picked because a lot of D1 coaches won't even look at anything besides regional/national championships for club, but are all over the DA, even the lower levels. That being said, make sure your club can qualify for Region 1 or National League and get into those tournaments. Disney, Dallas Cup, Annandale, Potomac all essential to college exposure as tournaments in MA attract like 90% low-level new england d2/d3.

Oh yeah, no d1 coaches recruit MA HS soccer. Fact of life. So you better play club in spring.

Intangibles - Your kid might be big and fast compared to kids his age, which is great, but when everyone hits this age and level they'll be just as fast and just as strong as he is - it's very rare that someone is more athletic of everyone else for an entire career, just b/c puberty etc. You can, however, make yourself stand out by being big and fast (which is what ncaa coaches want). Players that are >6ft, 180 lbs in addition to being technical really stand out. And if you are recruited, you better hit the weight room in the spring/summer before freshman year or you will 1) get cut 2) die 3)quit because it hurts too much. Find a GOOD gym with a trainer - Total Athletic Performance in Acton is my best recommendation - and work at it. 80% of kids in high-level club (region 1 prem league, college id tournaments etc) don't lift enough to be strong enough for ncaa matches.

Misc- mentally, it's a difficult process for the kid, because there's so much pressure to do this or that or go to this school. Remember that a lot of the pressure comes from the parent. I know you mean well (by reading this thread - spammers, shut up, dad just wants his kid to be the best player possible) and I can say that I absolutely would not have gotten to this level if my mom didn't push me for years. That being said, there's a difference between pushing and abusing. I would caution against going over videotape with your kid or trying to coach at home - let your club coach do that. Chances are a kid at that level knows when he messes up and doesn't need you to hammer him again for it.

$-Club soccer costs money, unless you steal a spot on the Revs. Expenses including club fees, travel, equipment, gas, extra training can and will cost you a lot of money. I think my parents paid ~ 2000 a year for five years for my soccer education. You might look at it as an investment, but unfortunately, nothing is ever guaranteed, and you're gonna have to live with the fact that your kid might not make it, becomes disinterested or injured or something. You should be prepared for this scenario and be realistic about it. There's a lot more to life than playing d1, especially if you do well in school.

Hope that helps. Good luck to your kid and let him lead you through his own soccer journey.
