depends what you consider "marginal" - in my mind as a parent patriot league is awesome, some of the top universities in the country, Brown holy cross etc--and d1 I terms of scholarship potential.

Id be thrilled if one of my kids went that route, that's just me. of course if you are US national team and can play for ucla or notre dame you get the best of both school/athletics go for it, but lets be realistic, most of the typcical da player or whatever aren't going there.

Brown is in the Ivy League and does not offer athletic scholarships.

Actually top football talent do not go to college. Typical players who are good go to college.

So its not so clear cut anymore, hes thinking exactly what you said, I'm not sure want to sit at a medicore school for two years just cause its d1 when I can go to one of the best academic schools in the country (and get merit aid anymore).

When kids actrually go through the recruiting process the tough part is most of those d1 coaches wont tell you outright that prob wont play fr/soph, they are selling you so it becomes a tough decision

          The t
Exactly right. That's why this analysis (thank you again whoever does it) is such an important data point. And it isn't just freshman starts but how long and meaningful their careers are. If you haven't yet I encourage you to look at the analyses done on prior years. Many kids are gone by junior year, few play in a meaningful way for all four years. It's important for kids to see that as they are considering schools. Deciding on what school to attend is a complex process for any student. No matter what academics/fit with the school has to be a priority. Anything can happen (burnout, cuts, etc). If you don't like the school that much then what? If you can play decent soccer at a school you love that's a bonus.

Will echo that this analysis is awesome and should be helpful for parents helping to steer their kids. Coach won't tell the player they won't see the field much, kid may overestimate his ability, club coach may not know despite trying to be helpful. In fact, the college coach may not know- some kids are just not as successful as projected at the next level (and this can include the DAP players with superior technical ability but less athleticism). Same thing applies at all levels- potential D3 players (and/or their parents) should do some similar analysis to see how things work out. Lots of good players assume they're going to be D3 starting line-up freshman year and then find out differently.

Folks, no guarantees anyway in life that I know of , other than taxes and death. No sure what use these stats are. Is it to somehow discourage ambitions of playing advanced soccer (D1, D2, D3)? Or convince someone to play D3 instead of accepting a D1 offer ? No guarantees there either.

It's just a reality check. Players end up in a few categories (below). Category 1 is substantive enough to give pause. Players need to consider these realities as they evaluate schools, programs, and where they might fit into all of it. Where does soccer fit in vs academics and at what level? What compromises are you willing to make? Can you sit on the bench for a full year waiting for several seniors to graduate? Is it a school you can love if you stop playing?

Plenty of mistakes are made in the search process. It's a complex process. The more you know the less likely you are to make them yourself. Personally I think it's better to go in knowing full well the realities - it might make you work that much harder, and if it doesn't work out you're less likely to be flattened unexpectedly

                1) never play (and hence are cut or drop out)
                2) play some for a year or two
                3) burn out (tough to tell how big a group this is)
                4) have a meaningful career

Just to throw in something. A player can also transfer from D1 to D3 if it does not work out. Don't have to sit out a year. I know of someone that actually played good minutes at D1 PC as a freshman and still decided to transfer to a strong D3 academic/soccer school. His reason was that his academics were more important to him and he was missing too many classes and labs playing for PC. He did not regret his decision at all. The kids was from Dallas Texas area DAP team.

You're missing a bunch of players who have made huge impacts for their teams. Wheres Jack Harrison, Amadu Kunateh, Mark Leon, Trevor Davock, and Dylan Mott??
