Its similar to the difference between a plow horse and a thoroughbred. Both can be taught to run around the track but ultimately the thoroughbred will win simply because their breeding is designed to produce a faster horse. Training isn't the problem. For the amount of time and money families are putting into club soccer you would expect to see a much greater impact just by the nature of the concentrated effort. The fact that you don't really underscores that it is not the training.

The fact that the US has some of the best athletes in the world would prove you wrong, it is the training, or lack of quality training and quality competition! MLS is full of great athletes, some of the best anywhere, where they lack is with their soccer IQ and technical ability. We are getting better every year, but are still many years away from being a top contender.

Are you kidding? It is absolutely the training. By your logic Icelanders would need to be a race of super athletes for them to have produced a world class team.

Another piece of evidence: the best players leave the US as soon as they can . . . For better training.

Please, the coaching and talent identification in the US are subpar, well below the level to produce top players, and a competitive national team.

You are dreaming if you think the sport of soccer is getting the very best athletes in the country. Sorry but soccer is about 4-5th on the list.

We do have plenty of athletes - certainly enough to create a top national team. It's what we do with them that's at issue. Iceland got every coach UEFA A or B licensed. That means starting at 5 years old kids learn how to play soccer properly. Here kids have well intentioned but wholly unqualified volunteer parent coaches. By the time they get into DA - even if they're in by 12, which many are not - there's years of lost training. Then, as we know, DA coaching is inconsistent at best.

The sports kids pick are more a function of culture, not their athletic ability. We do not have a soccer culture. Kids will gravitate to the more popular sports, the ones their friends play, their families follow on TV. Here the big 3 sports dominate. In the rest of the world soccer dominates.

What is the primary sport in Iceland? In this country the top most gifted athletes all play the big money sports like basketball, football or baseball. Soccer is down like the 4-5th most popular. Sorry Iceland is just not an apples to apples comparison. You clearly have a b' in your bonnet about the coaching in this country but the fact is the women in this country have done a heck of a lot more with a heck of lot less when it comes to their training environments and the reason is generally soccer gets the top level female athletes in this country.

Our domination of the women’s game was because of Title IX and college ball. The rest of the world is now catching up and clubs are beginning to put resources towards women. We are losing our lead because our coaching and development is subpar compared to the rest of the world.

Yes you are correct. We do have the athletes and talent It's what we do with them that's the primary issue. There's a reason our top male players go abroad and don't play MLS. There's a reason college coaches take internationals players over ours. while this has been primarily a male issue the number of female international players in college is growing rapidly as well.

You can bash your brethren coaches all that you like for their training failures but the reality is soccer is not the most important sport to the American male and until it is the sport will always lag behind in this country. The issue you are going at with the women is very different. It really comes down to money being the catalyst. On one hand you have someone discounting our women's dominance because it was fueled by title 9 and then on the other hand you want to claim that the big money that is now flowing into the women's game abroad and creating a sort of title 9 situation for the women in other countries is proof of their training superiority. The fact is what you are saying basically proves the point that it is not actual training programs it is the financial incentives that push the athletes into committing themselves to their sport that ultimately makes the difference. The big problem with soccer in this country on the men's side is the money in the game is not nearly good enough to convince the best athletes in this country to stay with soccer. The picture is very different on the women's side where largely because of title 9 and the huge head start our women got we are an export nation and now send our best and brightest overseas. The ratio of foreign players to American trained players in our college ranks is still very small.

ah, they're better than US players? Just a guess, based on fact.

Are you telling me a 5-6 year old kid that decides to play a particular sport is because of how much the professional level player is making? Absurd!
The amount of soccer players in this country far outnumbers any other sport.

Beyond the enjoyment piece, kids pick sports partly based on what their friends and family play. In the US that (mostly) isn't soccer. They get interested in professional teams and pro athletes based on what their friends and family follow. In the US that (mostly) isn't soccer.
