GPS parents are getting plenty of return on investment from all the merit and academic scholarships from D3 as they are a bright and talented group. The boys soccer skills have helped tip the admissions odds in their favor to attend places like Amherst, Bowdoin, Brandeis, Hamilton, Union, Williams, etc., also a good ROI. Now they can get a good education and play the game they love. I'm also willing to bet their starting salaries post college will be higher than the average US-born MLS player.

Any academic scholarships awarded will have very little to do with soccer. GPS has lots of smart kids. So do many clubs since soccer tends to skew affluent and education driven families. Comparing to MLS salaries is absurd given how few players will go pro. Comparing average salary school to school is the more important measure

If your argument is that getting into a D3 school is a bad ROI, one assumes you are saying that getting a D1 scholarship is better. With men's teams of 30 sharing 10 full scholarships, I would say academics and merit are better money, and the D3 schools that a lot of the GPS kids are going to are generous with those.

And, with all the competitiveness out there for admission to the top D3 schools, you are nuts to think that a coach putting you down as one of his recruits does not give you an advantage over equally-qualified applicants. It won't get you in if not qualified, but it will move you into a different pile. Sure, my son might have even been more attractive to top schools, and it would have been cheaper, if he had started a homeless shelter or been a concert bassoonist, but those were not things he was passionate about. He loves soccer and now gets to play it at a top D3 school and I know that the coach saying he would "support" the application could only have helped.

So please, find another thread where you can sell the idea that club soccer is a waste. GPS kids and parents are happy. I am happy that some other path may have worked for your kid and I wish them the best. Have the grace to do so for others.

Most D1 recruits are coming from the academies and Black Rock -- that's just the trend now.

Also, the latest GPS seniors on their top teams are very skilled, but not particularly physically big, something D1 looks for. And the NPL team invited a bunch of D1 coaches to a state cup game last year, but then had their worst game of the season and lost to Aztecs, who won the state cup.

GPS parents are getting plenty of return on investment from all the merit and academic scholarships from D3 as they are a bright and talented group. The boys soccer skills have helped tip the admissions odds in their favor to attend places like Amherst, Bowdoin, Brandeis, Hamilton, Union, Williams, etc., also a good ROI. Now they can get a good education and play the game they love. I'm also willing to bet their starting salaries post college will be higher than the average US-born MLS player.

Agreed - Maybe the Gates Foundation will will fund some "Free Soccer Training Academies" for the poor, disenfranchised souls in Massachusetts who wish to become professional soccer players, but for whatever reason don't / can't play for the Revs ... Seems like a noble enough cause ...
