If you get sick from the flu shot, even if it isn't the flu, it you do get sick and it can feel like the flu. That's what people are averse to. They don't care if it's actually the flu or just feels like the flu, it has the same result.

The herd immunity motivation for getting vaccinated is more abstract, and a lot of people who don't understand it see the flu vaccine as having a negligible or even negative personal benefit (similar to the people now who are going around saying they don't care about spreading Covid because they personally have a small chance of dying).

      Good gawd.

Herd immunity is when the vast majority of a population is either immune from having a disease or being immunized for it. That majority herd protects the few in society that haven't been sick or cant get immunized. Example: the anti vax movement is destroying herd immunity in some areas, which leaves babies who aren't old enough to get immunized vulnerable because measles runs through the non vax community

Even if you had 100% compliance on the flu vaccine it wouldn't matter. There are too many strains out there and they mutate all the time. So does the Corona virus. So did the 1918 pandemic flu. Sometimes it gets weaker, sometimes stronger. We could get a Covid 19 vaccine only to have it mutate while its being developed or produced, making it less and possible not effective at all. Other viruses are more stable and vaccines are more effective for them

It would probably be a significant improvement to have 100% compliance on the flu vaccine, compared to the current 50% compliance among adults and < 65% among children. Nevertheless you are right that 100% vaccination would not imply 100% immunity to all forms of flu.

They have been working on a universal flu vaccine that would protect against all strains. That would be a real game changer. It is unfortunate that each year's strain is so limited and not often a good match. That lowers compliance. At least we all have some flu immunity from prior exposure and vaccines if you get it. All healthcare workers get it each year which helps protect patients. We have an effective treatment with Tamiflu and many don't need it or even go to the doctor for it.

Personally we have gotten the flu vaccine every year after we lost a friend to H1N1. They were in pretty good health ( a bit overweight), my age. We don't always escape the flu but generally do pretty well. My spouse lost their spleen in car accident a long time ago. When they get sick they get way sicker than the rest. Our family unit needs to help keep them healthy

                Lets hope you are right.

We (and every other gov't) understandably under-reacted early, and made move to flatten the curve too late. Now, in a lame political posturing game, we are over-reacting and are extending our re-opening procedures beyond the point at which it is known to be safe. LOOK at the data, avg. age death in MA - 82 years old. 98% underlying conditions. 62% in LTC.

We know who gets it, where they get it, and we can protect them.

Agreed. Been watching our leaders react instead of lead for three months. Slow to react in March, over reacting in May, slow to reopen, then reacting to a destroyed economy. Now you’ve got an election year with reacting politicians who are only making decisions for their careers not for our safety or our economy. You have a Governor like of RI not wearing a mask with 10,000 protesters, but she says no to soccer games, graduations and funerals.

Soccer will be back when we the people stand up for ourselves and not be used a pawns.
Our kids and teachers and athletes should have a normal school year not the “new normal.”
But politicians and media instilled fear and let’s face it shame that many people are afraid.
Soccer will be back if we the people say so. Say no to the new normal and yes to getting back to normal.

Good gawd. Go ahead and protest at the capital. You've been able to all along. Make sure to take your gun with you too.

No gun and not a trump supporter or a liberal left. Just a person with good old fashioned common sense and can smell political motives from far away. The politicians will keep us all in fear until after the election if we let them. That way we are controlled and spoon fed rhetoric.
If you want your life back you should actually think about it for a minute than coming back with “Good Gawd” comments.

Is your theory the same for all the other countries that shut down?

And there's nothing wrong with the economy, at least according to Mr. Trump. The stock market skyrockets almost every day.

Some countries were shut down even harder than the US.
