U.S. vs. T&T: MNT vs. WNT

U.S. Men's Team: "... on the last night of World Cup qualifying, with the United States national team falling 2-1 to Trinidad & Tobago in a shocking upset that, coupled with results elsewhere in CONCACAF, has seen the USMNT fail to qualify for the World Cup."

U.S. Women's Team: "The U.S. Women’s National Team concluded Group A play at the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship with a third consecutive dominating 7-0 victory against Trinidad & Tobago. The USA hit the woodwork five times in the match – each time by Morgan – and T&T’s ‘keeper made 15 saves, but the USA piled up a remarkable 59-0 shot margin over the entire game, putting 22 on goal."

Can’t compare men’s vs women’s soccer because one is more developed than the other. US is a powerhouse on the women’s side, men’s side it’s Top 30-50 in the world.

WNT looks very strong right now. Fun to watch.

The men's game in these other countries, even itty bitty Trinidad and Tobago, is so much more developed than the women's game. You are just getting nations buying into the idea that women's soccer is important. Add to that the lack of funding for a women's program in a smaller nation that has just begun to consider the women's game, and you get a 7-0 thwacking by the well-established, well-funded, well-developed USWNT. You will NOT see the US women doing that to Germany, or Japan, or Sweden, or even now Canada. But to a small nation like Trinidad, that should not be a surprise. But our men's team, despite the same luxury as the women's team, is a nation still trying to sit at the adult table. They can get there, but they can't hold their spot. Just my opinion!

I watched the game. Very entertaining. The U.S. men have every advantage as the women (plus some) but you are correct that the other countries the men compete against have a head start. They are on the right track.

Agreed and Columbia is very good. No comparison between Men's T&T and Columbia.

And yet they would get stomped by a decent 17 year old boys club team. If the US woman are fun to watch, I suggest finding a decent local boys high school team and you'll be overcome with excitement.

It's more a matter of the rest of the world being bad rather than the US women being good. Once the rest of world puts time and money into female soccer, the US women will fare no better than the men.

I think that the woman's game here is more developed because you have better athletes. Soccer is one of the top choices in terms of sports. For men here you have so many other sports BEFORE soccer. A college football team can have up to 100 players many won't really see quality playing time. Think of how many back up QBs would make great midfielders for example. You also have baseball, basketball, track, hockey. Also the earning potential for those sports are far greater that MLS. So the women's side has been strong and will remain strong. If you think about it soccer-crazy Brazil should have a strong women's soccer team but US WNT always plays them well.

No. Just no. In a nation of 320M people we have plenty of athletes. What we don't have is soccer players. We do a sh*t job of identifying and developing talent, honing skills, nurturing soccer IQ. Savvy players with any chance of making it professionally get out of the US as soon as they can.

I agree with this. I do think the US men's team is bringing in younger talent and will have a seat at the table against many teams but maybe not Columbia yet. Eventually we will find 11 players who can have that magic and beat Columbia. Two goals after half time was a positive.

Problem with brazil as I see it is lack of patience in offensive 1/3. Marta and co sometimes just take low percentage shots without waiting for support. If they ever.fixed that part of game, they may beat uswnt.
