    College ID Camps

Looking into a few of these camps for my son (11th grade). Prices, locations, and coaches attending vary, but I'd like to hear any personal feedback. Anyone have any experience with the following camps:

My son went to PPA several times in Mass and once in FLA. Always good. Lots of coaches. Make sure your s connects with the ones he is interested in beforehand.

CSA was also pretty good but for some reason was much smaller last summer than the year before when he went. Maybe due to field at BU being re-turfed.

Thank you! Was your son interested in BU at all? Or just went for other reasons?

There are many outfits like those listed above that have camps with multiple coaches attending (some big, some much smaller). But many colleges have their own that are either just for that specific school OR have coaches from other schools attend. Those also can vary in size. Example Villanova has several massive ones while another college may have just one with 8 coaches.

Does your son have a target list of schools yet? I wouldn't even register for any camp until that's done. Focus on what events give him the most bang, meaning has the biggest list of schools he's interested in. Also have him see if any of the target coaches are running their own camps (information is almost always found on the team websites, sometimes listed under "other") or will be attending one run by someone else. Many of the smaller schools don't run camps or it's very limited. For any camp he should contact coaches of interest ahead of time with his bio and highlight film and tell them he will be attending. If the school isn't coming up at an event or doesn't have their own camp just ask the coach where he will be.

Are folks really still sending highlight films?
Aren't showcase tournaments and ID camps enough?
Or is this for kids who don't attend those?
Are coaches really asking for highlight video? My understanding is that they'd rather see a tape of one game.

Yes. And I've asked a few friends who are college coaches and they say similar things - quick video will help them decide if they want to check out a player/put them on a list. Video has to be very brief (2-3 minutes max). They will ask for more footage if either they can't see the player in person sometime soon or they have questions that. But most do not have time to scroll through entire game films - good programs get emails from 100s of players. Even then they want to see the player in person at showcases and camps

if your son is interested in attending a certain school and going to an ID camp there, what age/grade is the time to start? Thanks

We're in this mess right now and are trying to figure it all out. There are a few ID camps that have several coaches my D is interested in - not held at the schools but one of these bigger outfits with multiple coaches. She's just starting out and isn't even sure where she stacks up what kind of interest she'll get, so it was recommended to go this route and then do school-specific ones as the list gets narrowed down (coaches will often invite you personally to those if they're interested. Anyway, this is what we've been told so she's doing that route. It seems like they all overlap anyway so you do have to pick and chose and I'm not growing Benjamins in the backyard either

My college coach friends don't look at tapes. Their assistants might, if they have the time and are dutiful enough. Best way to get their attention is for your kid to attend a clinic and dominate.

One of my kids was on a top local club team, didn't always show well at national level tournaments, and was recruited only after dominating and getting coach support at a clinic.

So in other words go ahead and make one but don't spend too much time on it or money!. I've seen some that are over produced with graphics and music. They might be fun to show the grandparents but coaches could care less. Just game highlights. 3 minutes or less

                            Necessary Evil

So glad we're on the other side of this now. Wish I could take a vacation with the extra money, but now have to save it for tuition! Got lots of aid, with coach's help, but even a 75% pkg at a 65K school seems a lot to us.

My kid go a LOT of interaction, and several recruiting visits, etc. out of both PPA and CSA. PPA was VERY intense. High-level programs and players, many D1. CSA was excellent, and a better fit for my kid (and probably most). Lots of DII and III programs. I remember my kid being thrilled he did PPA first, as it pushed him and prepped him. By the time he went to CSA a week or 2 later, he was top of his game, felt confident, and ultimately solidified his spot in the program he program he's joining in the fall.

I always felt guilty bc could only afford max 2 Id camps per year, but son analyzed the coaching staff at each, and chose the ones where he got most bang for his buck.

Had a roommate at 1 ID camp who spent the entire summer going from camp to camp to camp. His parents must have spend $3k a year in ID camps alone! Was so discouraged when I heard that, but my son ended up at his top choice, while it doesn't seem to have worked out for that kid. (Seems to have been a case of aiming too high.)

Also, don't underestimate the 1 day camps at the schools your kid is really into. They're more economical.

And yes, videos are still necessary in order for a coach to decide if he/she wants to invest the time to check out a player in person. Best to use Youtube or similar, and just send coach the link.

Good luck, and make sure your kid tries to ENJOY the process. They only get to do it once, and should try to see it as fun.

My daughter is U12 and plays up on her team. There will be an I.D. camp in our area later this month. They have different times for U12 and below, and U13 and above. OK, I know everyone thinks their kid is great (and they are), but I sincerely believe my daughter will dominate if she goes to this I.D. camp because she plays up. and I've seen her match up with the kids her age My question is whether this I.D. camp has any value at all for her. What's the point of going to an I.D. camp if your kid is only U12? Are the college coaches really looking at that age bracket?

Yeah, yeah, I know, "your kid sucks and you don't know it", etc., etc., flame, flame, flame.

But seriously, if a kid is dominant at the U12 and under I.D. camp session, does that really matter?
