Interesting take.
Futsal is big in lots of places, but no so much in the US, I'll agree with that.
The whole warmer climate thing not some much though.
Its essentially street soccer, so its played a lot more in warm places where you can be outside, maybe not as organized. The organization and industrialization of the sport will mess it up somewhat, but engage more kids, so that is a win I guess. US Soccer made an Academy League for Futsal now, so the arms race has begun there as well.....
Where we may diverge is the needless inclusion of "a for profit club", just to level the playing field, ALLLLLL the clubs are for profit (not capitalized), meaning they are there to make cash and provide jobs for the staff and salaries for the "directors", you are deluded if you think "Non Profits" do not make profit, that is naive and not three dimensional. That's a problem in comprehension here in the US, people take it literally, n-o-n p-r-o-f-i-t, it makes no money. "If" a non profit can qualify for grants because of its status on IRS forms, that's really "profit" aka free money in addition to whatever they drag in, anything more than a town rec program is For Profit conceptually regardless of their tax filings (the town programs should be trying to make more than they spend to reinvest in the program and make it a virtuous cycle of positive growth, haha, that doesnt happen). Non profits are not run to have a zero dollar balance in their accounts and not pay staff.
The issue with the trip to CA will stand also with the people who tour the 3v3 tourney circuit and go to Disney. Same idea, no real benefit except having fun. For 99.9% of the kids, seriously, its only realistic to look at this as fun. If your kid isn't in the National Camp pool, or on a DA team getting offers to play somewhere, its all about the fun..... Just own that now and life will be easier later.
If they aren't playing at Wake Forest or the equivalent, then it doesnt matter where they play or if they play at all when it relates to soccer..... sad truth, its only about fun at that point. If you have boys, for those of you who are new to this nonsense, there are only 9.9 scholarships per D1 squad - digest that, not like 43 for football or some insanity like that, just for you no so bright folks, there are 11 kids on the field, I think you can do the math from there. (also, just so you know, start reducing the 9.9 by each foreign player, so if there are SA kids, or Caribbean kids, well, start reducing the 9.9, just be realistic with yourself)
So I think the problem with youth sports is that parents are not educated going into it and get swept up in all the excitement if their child is a strong athlete or player. I wish the information was there clearly early on so people wouldn't get dragged down a path of delusion...... It can happen with the families going to CA or Disney, its just fun and the kids are still little. The second tier clubs prey on these families and I feel bad for them, but then at same time they irritate the f out of me as they do not even have a clue where their kid actually plays in the big picture. If your kid is in the NEP and they play a club that has DA, lets say Beachside or the Bolts, theyre not playing the same kids, deluded, the club isn't dropping DA kids to beat up your NEP team... You are playing the 4th team.
Stuff changes between 13 and 15 for boys (girls happens earlier). Some grow, some don't, testosterone is the great equalizer/disruptor around this age for boys. When they're all about the same size (u10/u11)the smaller kids look more agile and skilled, then, they don't grow and suddenly get knocked off the ball and are discarded - from best on squad to not on squad. (we have all seen it). Big strong kids that popped early - same thing, they dominated because they were big and strong, now all of a sudden everyone is big and strong, from top to bottom real fast unless they have foot skills and good mind..... The kids who worked the craft all along and aren't too small or too big, they hold on. (goes to the "OW doesn't develop" guys complaints - he doesn't step back and look at the big picture, kids change - soccer doesn't, thats ok, hes hurt, maybe his kid didn't grow, or was one of the big kids that got clipped)
Sorry for going off topic. Have a great Monday everyone.
