There is a technical way to figure it out, but the easy way is the following:
The older year of the current system is what carries forward. So in the current system, 00/01's are u15 this year. So next year, the 00's become u16. The younger year stays the current age group. So the 01's stay u15. It seems like they get an additional year of soccer, but its not.

If going by that chart, many 2000's will never play u16 and go straight to u17.
Look up the other threads and you will even see posts that bring up the different charts showing different standards.
And yes, the other charts I'm reffering to are from US Soccer as well.

But the main thing to take away is that the u[age] won't really matter. If you are an 02, you are an 02. Tournaments will have 02, 03 age groups instead of u14, u13 labels.

So a current u16 who was born Dec. of 99 will be u18 next year and completely skip u17. That's crappy
It doesn't really matter because everything will go by the actual birth year labels (01, 02, 03) instead of u16, u17.
But it may become an issue with colleges who want to look at "u17's" next year. The girls born in 99 (Aug-Dec) will skip straight to u18 and petentially not be looked at (even though they would have under the old system).
Again, the issues are small, but still worth noting.

The u16 born in Dec. 1999 will be on a 1999 birthdates team in the fall (2000s could play up on the team) College coaches will be scouting all 1999 teams next year as many of those players will be juniors. The year after that, the club will most likely still have enough players to call a team a 1999 (again 2000s could playing up on it). College coaches would still come watch the 1999 team in two years as the team would have seniors and maybe some juniors playing up.
But my example can actually happen.
There are many schools that may scout a particular graduation year because they already have a full freshman class coming in. Or they already have enough Senior prospects. So they go scout specifically a High School Junior class. It happened to some girls on our u17 team last year from a D2 school.
I'm not saying its an issue worth worrying about. No matter what, there will always be girls on a team that are 11 months apart.
Only now, they match up by calendar year; which doesn't match the graduation year.
For example, lets say 16 players on a u18 team are equally divided between 8 97's and 8 98's. So a college coach was able to scout all those seniors by looking at that u18 team. Now to see those same seniors, he will have to visit the u18 team as well as the u19 team (98's and 99's). If he only wants to go to see the 98 team, the 99's lose out.
Its a stretch and a very specific example just to illustrate a point.
