They should have been sending video, making calls and having club coaches call for them. They just can't visit campuses now or ID events. D3 has no restrictions. Most D1 spots were already wrapped up, especially anything with athletic money attached. I feel for the non recruited kids but if they're not getting recruited they likely would have been disappointed regardless of Covid.

Saw this on a similar thread in the CT board

I realize it's tough, but a lot of this is going to be a waiting game.

Some facts. I am giving you current and correct information. READ!

D1 - Dead period. Coaches may not have any in-person contact with recruits and/or their parents. In other words, coaches are not allowed to talk to recruits ON their college campus, the athlete’s school, an athletic camp or even the grocery store. Athletes and coaches are still allowed to communicate via phone, email, social media and other digital communication channels.

D2 - This link explains ALL of the D2 laws right now. Scroll through, most important stuff is highlighted. This was put out on May 22.

D3 - There are no restrictions here. This was updated May 18. Scroll to the bottom of Page 6.

I don't think the dead period extension affects contacting 2022s in June...it has more to do with giving certain regions an unfair advantage in the recruiting game (primarily with regards to Football). If Alabama has no Covid-19 restrictions, but Michigan is still "phasing" their re-opening, Alabama has the unfair advantage of conducting recruiting events & activities.
Not to mention if you're a recruit targeting a school in a state that is not within a reasonable drivable distance. If desired school is holding an ID camp, and a kid is forced to get on a plane to attend it-that opens a whole new can of worms.

I don't think this has much to do with coaches calling 16 year old soccer players and gauging interest in their school.

They can still talk, email etc (assuming they're past the restriction date). Like you said there just isn't any in person/on campus activity allowed yet. Besides state and local restrictions, some campuses just aren't comfortable having what they consider non essential visitors on campus yet.

I think this will hit 2022 hardest because schools will be skipping a year recruiting or significantly offering less scholarship money - they just can’t spend it
            - most 2021s already committed in November

Nothing is binding for 2021s until NLIs start being signed in November of 2020.

Bingo! The 2020's already signed NLI's so they're all set. There are colleges dropping sports and slashing athletic budgets. There just isn't any money in the pot for the 2021's.

Do you realize how many colleges there are in the country? Yes there are some that are cutting sports because of $, but there are many more that are not. 2021's will be just fine. Relax.

True, but there will not be any tournaments or showcases for 21's before NLI.

Schools aren't skipping a year of recruiting, but the uncertainty is definitely going to affect the size of the recruiting classes and the amount of total scholly $ allocated to the 2022 class. Coaches are going to be held accountable for every dollar and are going with kids that "look good on paper".
All those arguments that "coaches don't shop leagues", "it doesn't matter what team your kid plays on, they can show well at ID clinics", "if they're talented, they will be recruited" are not valid. Coaches need to be able justify their choices like never before, and they will be taking little to no risk on the "diamond in the rough" kids with blank resumé's.

Thus far there have only been 2 men's teams cut (U Cin and Appalachia State) and no women's teams. Almost 100 sports have been cut so far but its nearly all sports like swimming or golf etc.

That said that doesn't mean there won't be more. In fact you can guarantee there will be. Governimg boards are looking at all cost cutting measures. Most of the big sports should be ok including soccer and definitely women's soccer (easy Title 9 fix). Scholarships could be slashed. If a school cuts 20 football scholarships and cuts the mens golf team, that frees up women's obligations

Scholarship budgets will be cut 20%-30% going forward. Once they are cut they will not return to pre-Covid levels.

21s not done yet are in a tough spot. This spring and summer was the last time to be seen at ID events and many have been cancelled. Normally there aren't many ID enemy's in the fall because it's full on season for the programs, but maybe more run this fall out of necessity. Much of the D1 recruiting was done for top coach picks and money. Some coaches could decide to have a smaller recruiting class for 2021.

Recruiting wise coach budgets will be crazy tight. They will really have to pick and chose events. Events that don't require extensive travel will be important. This is where the ECNL model helps - they have some east coast vs west coast events rather national. Most kids will stay within a half day's drive from home anyway. Also look to see even more ID events on campuses once they can return. Coaching staff don't have to travel and it makes money for them.

Everyone is now concentrating on more regional vs. national showcases.
