FSM .. Are you telling me nobody at one of your school's football games ever criticized a refs call or jeered the opposition? I've sat in Cameron during a basketball game. Being crazy was half the fun. When is it OK to boo an official or cheer wildly for your team?

BTDT, there is a big difference between booing and cheering wildly then the "in your face" stuff we see today. And there is a big difference between sitting in the bleacher of a football game where your opponent (at least in my day) sat across the field, compared to a soccer match where you are on the touchline shoulder to shoulder with the opposing fans and a few feet from players and officials.

I went to a high school game yesterday that got darn near ugly and this was among a group of parents that are normally pretty well behaved. All it takes is a close and physical game, some questionable calls and the sparks start flying. There is nothing fun about parents going after a player under those circumstances.

And BTW, this was the first game of the season that I saw where the officiating did fan the flames, but the hoots and hollers did nothing to correct situation. One team was definitely schooled in the art of the slide tackle and bodies were flying everywhere. Some of those tackles may have been legal, I don't know, but the refs were calling anything a foul that resulted in a flying body. On the other hand, I would have judged from my vantage point that several were from behind and may have deserved a card which in turn may have kept a lid on things early in the game. Twice in the game it looked like players were going to come to blows and one even mad contact, but still no cards were shown. It was just amazing.

My 16 year old daughter works town games ages up through u15 and MAPLE games. the early sunday morning maples as the sole ref. sunday afternoons as possibly a ref for younger ages, linesman for up to as old as maple gets. does a great job.

Are you the father/daughter pair of refs working side-by-side fields at some U10 games in Devens? Thought it was really sweet when I saw a young female ref talking with an older male ref at half-time and as he walked away she said, "bye, dad." :)

I watch MSL on occasion, and some of the comments imply any time an offensive player goes to the ground it must be a foul.
I'm sure some of the refs are watching as well.

Good point on slide tackling. It is hard to execute one even legally these days and not get called on it. There are obvious legal and illegal tackles but the hardest ones to call are ball first and subsequent contact with the opponent. Those get called very inconsistently but to be fair to the officials it is one of the hardest calls to judge. Furthermore - fans that are 80 yards away cannot see the contact with the ball, sometimes the subsequent contact is minimal but the player goes down anyway. They want a call but in reality there should be none. Everybody watches sports through a prism that is constructed via your desire for a favorable outcome.

BTDT, I'm not promoting Silent Sundays. I think our differences may be we define "boisterous" participation of the fans a little differently. Spitting, bottle throwing, name calling directed at either refs or players I can definitely do without. I don't mind old fashion booing. I don't mind when the crowd hollers at a player as you might find when a player is taking a free throw. There was a group of boys at a girls game yesterday with signs, cowbells and horns they were loud and boisterous and having fun without it being at anyone's expense.
