FL Girls ODP

How does one find out more about girls ODP and do they have open tryouts? If yes, when? Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Please remember that many of the girls that would have been in GA ODP are in ENCL and ENCL have their own form of "ODP". My daughter was part of 99 ODP team and many of the strong girls from FKK and Jacksonville chose not to participate as the years went by. We are are no longer sending our best to ODP.

ECNL -
Geographically under represents big parts of the country
Club based and not Team based so there will always be weaker teams playing in the "2nd Division" of ECNL because they have to
Massively deepens the SES divide for potential players as many ECNL teams have or will nearly double the cost for families with coaching fees, additional travel, etc.

ECNL is where many of the brand name clubs are now playing and many good players can be seen there of course BUT, in many respects, you've just traded "ODP politics" for "club politics". If you're not in an ECNL club, not one in your area, or can't afford it, you're on the outside looking in.

ECNL is starting a "regional training program" made up of ECNL event all-stars that looks and sounds alot like an ODP mini-camp. The ECNL is just run by the clubs and their appointees (and sponsored by Nike) NOT like ODP by State or Regional USYSA administrators (often sponsored by Adidas).

Currently, until the regional training stuff gets going, there isn't really any state or regional level selection process through ECNL. You get invited to the national events or not. Dozens if not hundreds of players that may benefit from different/additional state or regional-level training will no longer get that from ECNL. I have a feeling the ECNL clubs are not going to be as cooperative about regional training as their PR machine would indicate.

Many college coaches view ECNL as an enigma. Nice to see many good players in one place but very many college coaches prefer accessing these players through ODP. In ODP you get to actually work with the players in a training or camp environment and most college coaches don't want to be "full time" club coaches with an ecnl level commitment expected of them. College coaches like the ODP access and commitment level and don't have to work directly with club coaches. ECNL is empowering and enriching club coaches - not always the best thing for players.

I don't buy the whole "seen in your natural environment" argument. When players go to college or a USNT camp, they need to function in new environment, in a new role, with a new voice, and different players. ODP is the perfect preparation for that, ECNL is not really. In other words, that girl that plays Center Mid for her club team may have to be a left back in college - but may never train as such with her club team.

Just a few thoughts. I like a lot of the ECNL philosophy but have already seen examples of the same-old club politics and don't know if this alphabet soup is good for players, at least not yet.

There is some interesting thoughts/observations in here. My daughter is active in both (ECNL and ODP in Florida). Both of the programs have strengths and weaknesses. Ideally, if your daughter is passionate about the game, she could have a chance to do both. She really enjoys ODP and the ODP Alabama Camp.

ECNL has id2, not quite the same as ODP, just a single camp for a few select players. You're correct, most of the best '99's don't play ODP now, but not because of ECNL, because they are already committed. If you're committed and not already on Nat'l team radar then ODP at that age is just for some additional training. Not worth weekend travel, mostly Orlando and Tampa girls left.

'99's by the way are the bestest group ever, having gone to ODP Nat'l Championships two years in a row. Thanks.
