That's great for these boys. What does a "verbal" commitment mean? Do they still have to go through the typical application process? Does it mean they need to maintain grades, etc... to actually attend the school?

It is a handshake agreement so that the player agrees to stop looking elsewhere. The real deal comes around next Feb when they sign a national LOI. These things usually work out. They still have to get accepted by the school academically. But the coaches usually know that drill and will study their portfolio to make sure that they are not wasting each other's time. In my experience, once they see a player of interest, academics is the first thing they ask about. A verbal commit is not a license to sit back and crash on your grades. Admission will note that.

At D1 schools the admissions office will review the academic record-to-date (remember a lot can happen between now and actual admssion) and verbally green light the student and even issue an "admissibility" letter prior to the student making a verbal commitment.

At this point, a student should feel really confident about admission assuming they will keep their grades at an acceptable level from this point onward and both the player and the coach don't have a change of heart about things.

Typically this blows up much more frequently because the player has a change of heart.

So 4 2012 commits so far for D1? Getting kind of late, no?
