    Soccer Manager

My kids manager is quite a manipulative person and always has been. Never cross her. Any good ones out there?

Yes definitely they are out there. When you find one treat them nicely. The better ones do it out of kindness and caring for the team, not to further their kid's situation.

Even better bet is to at a club that doesn't use them at all. Well run or bigger clubs usually have at least one staff member who does schedules, hotel's etc. Makes a huge difference

The biggest problem with most managers is that they let some power go to their heads. Having 3 players grow through youth soccer, we have seen so many managers. It is a thankless job, and if your kid is not a good player being the manager is a tough position. The smoothest run teams that we have a part of was the ones with the least amount of manager involvement. They should only send practice and game info. The manager we have now consistently makes decisions without approval, oversteps the coach and is very manipulative. She's better than the manager we had at Armada, but not by much

Bigger clubs should have bookkeepers collecting the team fees for hotels and travel fees. A manager should not be in the collection business. Way to many team managers step in to discipline the team and even the parents when this should not be their job.

Better than the mom being team manager and husband assistant coach. With attitude and know it all.

Manager wouldn't be in the collection business if parents paid what and when they are supposed to. As far as bookkeeping, every club should have a high level view of the funds that come in and go out for a team. The manager should have more detailed accounting broken down by player and sent to the parents monthly.

That is an issue with you club not setting rules. Daddy ball sucks to begin with but in rare cases it turns out ok. If you are unhappy with the job your manager does, then its your responsibility to discuss it in a team setting, politely if possible.

No. A parent manager shouldn't have any knowledge of finances. It puts them in a very difficult position. I've done it both ways and have been a parent at clubs that do both ways. There's a night and day difference having "professional" management vs parent - not only do things run more smoothly (generally) but it greatly reduces political bullsh - it. At most a manager should only be used to schedule games and send out communications. Preferred is the club handle ALL of that, either via the coach or a club staff member, and a "manager" simply answers occasional questions and organize team dinners etc.

Yes clubs and coaches need to chose managers carefully and step in when things are going south. But clubs and coaches also have to support team managers. I once had a manipulative parent try to start a coup (he wanted the job initially but didn't get it, lucky me lol) and the coach quickly stepped in and squashed it.

Yes. If the head coach, in consultation with the DOC, decides on league and tournament play, the team manager then creates a monthly budget and the parents then make those monthly payments timely, there will be no need for collection. However, the club should always monitor all team funds, those funds must be deposited into a club account, making use of the club's federal identification number, and team expense checks should always be requested from and issued by the club. A team manager should never be placed in a position to issue checks or make use of his or her own personal or business accounts.

The difficult part is getting all the parents to pay their team fees on time. When a payment plan is based on when funds are needed and parents are late the team is in trouble. When payments are higher in the beginning of the season to (to accommodate late parents based on experience) everyone complains. Everyone has a good excuse, but other bills get paid. The team manager should not have to put their relationship with the other parents at risk - this should be a club issue from the beginning.

The guy in an earlier post was correct. Team managers should only send info on practices and games. Everything else falls on the club and coach. Managers are most times a team mom, and they are the ones that start the most drama. They need the least amount of responsibility and power as possible.
