    D2/D3 College Recruiting

As the summer approaches and it's time to get serious about plans for college for current juniors, I'm curious about other's experience with the D2/D3 college recruiting process. After communicating with a coach, sending video, perhaps having them see you play, what is the next step? When will they decide whether they will support your application? How lng will the courtship continue? How many colleges do kids typically try to keep in the loop at this point?

First thing to keep in mind is the amount of time that will elapse before the national signing date their senior year. A lot of what comes next is relationship building. The D3 coaches can have pretty direct discussions almost from the start. The D2 coaches can start calling 6/15 after their sophmore year.

National signing date does not apply to D3, correct?

If the player wants to apply early decision, when will they know if a coach is going to support their application?

Just a little correction: D3 follows the same rules as D2 and D1: contact coming from the coach to recruit only after June 15th going to recruit's senior year. Before that, player can visit the instituition and talk directly to the coach. What's talked is not recorded and the term called "verbal commitment" can happen before June 15th. It is legal, since any recruit at anytime can decide to attend any college she/he desires.
D2 and D3 coaches are more aggressive and direct after June 15th, because by then most of the D1 (09) rosters are already done.

Calls can come the summer before the Senior year. You can call the schools as much as you want but they can not call you back.

OK, we've established when you can call and when the coaches can call. What do you say? What do you ask?

This is dead wrong and the post on the dates for D1, D2 and D3 shows that for all intents and purposes their are very few NCAA restrictions on D3 programs. Why? Because it isn't a problem for them to have contact with recruits. They can't offer athletic money and their assistance with admissions is marginal. If you are a C student with 1050 on the SAT, but a special player, you still won't get into MIT or Williams. What a D3 coach can do is help get a border-line applicant accepted. So if you are really interested in playing D3, put soccer in the back seat of your initial selection criteria. Realistically if you want a better chance with a good D3 program (which fits academically) you should initiate contact with the coach during your junior HS season and arrange for the coach to see you play during the following spring. Local D3 coaches will go to a wide range of venues to scout recruits, not just the top showcases, ODP or national events. Most will give you feed-back regarding the legitimate chances of acceptance. They might be a little more coy regarding on-field issues because they usually are less sure of their roster. In D3, upper-classmen are more likely to walk-away from the game and they get more walk-ons than at D1 and D2. Lots of D3 schools will scout HS games so don't just assume that if you haven't been seen by your junior year that it is over. As for films. DO NOT SEND HIGHLIGHT TAPES. Send full game films and clearly indicate number, jersey color and position changes. It also is helpful if you indicate when your player enters and exits a game. There is some difference of opinion about how to film. Do you go up high in the stands and cover most of the action, or do you focus on your player. Best bet is to ask a coach what they want. If a coach has interest they will respond and tell you. They may also indicate that they don't want videos but will look for a schedule to see the player in person. Ultimately, fostering reasonable communication between the coach, you and especially the player is the best thing a parent can do.

                  Re: D2/D3 College Recruiting

I have a kid who is a sophmore that has been approached by several D2 programs. One D2 coach told us that he has to wait until 6/15 to call. Is this incorrect?

                    Re: D2/D3 College Recruiting

Do not assume on D3 schools you can get in if you are a marginal student. Academic Standards at D3 schools including State Schools are being raised higher. Competition to get into D3 schools is getting harder and that is to get in not just play. Coaches very rarely make a committment to the Senior other than to let her know she is invited to camp and has a good shot of making a team depending on her position played.

I read somewhere the incoming Freshman for 2009 has the most kids graduating nationally in the history of stats.

Nothing is a sure thing anymore not even D3 schools!

                        Copied from above:
                        DIVISION II - Recruiting Guidelines

                        * Recruiting materials: September 1 of junior year: coaches may begin sending recruiting materials to student-athletes
                        * Telephone Calls: June 15: junior and senior year: Coaches may call you once per week; student-athletes may make unlimited calls TO coaches
                        * Off-campus contact: June 15 after junior year: coaches are allowed up to three off-campus contacts

                        * Unofficial visits: Student-athletes are allowed unlimited unofficial visits to schools
                        * Official visits: Official visits paid for by schools allowed following first day of classes of senior year; one official visit allowed per school; maximum of five official visits to DI and DII colleges

Most Coaches are not that interested in Sophomores (You did not indicate if she/he was an incoming Junior??)They may give you general info on their program but don't make the mistake to believe this is any more than general at this point. Not to say she/he may not be approached later but rarely does a coach even a D1 offer anything to a Sophomore.
