So the takers think everybody should get trophies. What a surprise.

I'm just happy they don't demand bigger trophies for the losers.

I havent seen "participation" trophies in any tournament since maybe the U8 or U9 level--and even then it was at a town-level tournament--not a real one.
Some conservatives think kindergarten participation medals are like a gateway drug to a lifetime of expecting stuff to be given to you.

Some conservatives recognize that liberal social engineering starts in the cradle and ends at the grave (but they are working on an extension).

Maybe you didn't win very much, you have low self esteem or lack the pride needed to self motivate but if you need a trophy to instill a winning spirit then you don't have it.

And as far as the "kids these days" sentiment in some of these posts you people are clueless. Kids today are subject to more pressure and higher standards of any generating yet in our country. We have high stakes testing in schools and sports are way more competitive than ever with private coaching, u little academy etc.... starting at younger and younger ages.

Agreed, but then again, this whole issue is not about reality, it's all about politics.

I agree. I suppose I am someone who does not fit nicely into the Conservative/Liberal spectrum since I have views and beliefs on both sides and think of the label as nothing more than a red herring to divide and conquer. But I digress.

What I do know is that when I was a kid, I received 4 trophies - 2 championships, a runner up and an MVP. HS championships were awarded with a coat or a plaque. But what I do remember getting a lot of was participation certificates. The wall in my room was loaded with them. When I look at my kid's award's area, I see a lot of trophies but not many certificates.

That makes me conclude that those that resent the award of a $5 trophy in lieu of a 10 cent certificate merely valued the actual hardware in their youth. However, it means something different today, and to me there is little difference.

BAYS gives out medals on ribbons (they look like military medals) to all 6v6 teams in the spring.

That must be new in recent years--didnt occur before that. But even so, if its 6v6 soccer, we are likely talking about 3rd and 4th graders, right? So who cares? They all get ice cream after the game too. At the actually competive levels, only the winners (or maybe runners up) generally get anything.

Watch out -- those ribbons will turn them all into welfare moms, commies or, worst of all, Democrats! lol

The Democrats are more likely to cause that condition than the ribbons. Let's root out the Democrats first and the ribbon nonsense will take care of itself. I forgot... Massachusetts. Well, let's root out the hard core socialists and race pimps, at least...

Here's the issue. You have two extremes. The Helicopter parent that are probably for trophies for all because they don't want Little Johnny's feelings hurt and the Win-At-All-Cost parent who makes sure the kid gets his glory and ain't sharing with no one. Both are bad, but ask any teacher which is more prevalent today.

The very worst of the worst is the Win-At-All-Cost Helicopter parent.

The very worst of the very worst is the Win-At-All-Cost Helicopter parent who also has to make sure that everyone else LOSES. "Graceful" is not a word in her vocabulary (unless she also has a daughter who does ballet or beauty contests...). What a household that must be.
