I have 2 season tickets in the Timbers Army. In the 5 years I’ve been going I have never spotted anyone in the stadium remotely fascist or a white supremacist; pretty sure soccer isn’t Murican enough for a typical Trumpanzee. What I do see all the frogging time in the North End are white college educated social justice warriors looking for a cause du jour to be a sheep about. If anything, all this iron front baloney is now going to make the Timbers targets of Proud Boys and the like... 🙄.

Agree, no need to make Civic Stadium ground zero. It's a game, let everyone enjoy it.

Do Trump supporters like soccer, sure they do. Didn't he refuse to touch a particular jersey pointing to his son's allegiance to Arsenal?

Lots of people at games not there for the game, Whatever it's their money. It's a show, an event. But still, it's not the time or place to make a political stand. Especially in an environment where there is an opposing group not afraid to clash.

Some of them--the black bloc--are morons who are spoiling for a fight, who think they are the French Resistance.

Others identifying as "antifa" are peaceful, even though the historical "antifa" in Weimar and early Nazi Germany were also street brawlers, who battled the brownshirts.

Fortunately, our politics is nowhere near as nasty as Weimar Germany, where political violence and armed factions were commonplace. Portland actually did the nation proud last Saturday, as most of the counterprotesters were peaceful (and goofy--dressing like bananas and such). A few fights broke out and a few thugs got arrested, but no widespread mob violence, no rioting and looting, and nobody got seriously hurt. And even though I've given them lots of sh1t in the past, the Portland Police Bureau did a fine job of keeping the peace. If both bands of thugs were complaining that the cops were helping the other side, that probably means the police did what they were supposed to.

As nasty as things may seem now--this ain't nothing like the civil rights era, where robed terrorists were routinely beating up on protesters (and African-Americans in general), and the police were often in cahoots with them.

Well the Army won the silent game v. front office (and supporters groups across league won the night v. MLS):

-held the line for 33 minutes, despite some efforts to get chants going, creating an eerie environment.
-Paulson cussing out some Army members after the game, yelling "you lost us the game". Stay classy Merritt, stay classy.
-despite all these efforts to stamp political symbols, sure enough as soon as the 33 minutes were over, a bunch of Iron Front Symbols show up in the camera (for about 10 seconds before ESPN caught it).

Oh and the Timbers lost a home game to their biggest rival and the Cascadia Cup to boot, but Army doesn't seem to care.

I do think you may see a civil war within the fan base over this, but Army won the night.

The Timbers sell 20K+ seats. The Army is a novelty they'd probably try to cull and control a bit more if they were doing it all over.


Those that support the flag is a very, very small %. The groups that could be turned off is very large %. Even the Army is very small. And they could do with out. Facts...

You can either keep buying $10 beer or go somewhere else. Their betting you'll go somewhere else and don't care.
