They are in awe of him, so yes, there's definitely status attached to it. Even my son is in awe of him and quite honestly, this Revs Academy player is a bit of a jerk.
All the Revs academy boys are basically arrogant jerks. No different than the varsity hockey player. Same mindset and attitude.

mine did not make it... despite a bunch of RTC. glad we did not waste money on RDS.. if they think you have something they will invite you in. Don't was $$ on RDS. U14 is not terribly important but "respect" to those boys who made it. I hope its everything you hope it would be.

Well that's not exactly a news flash. Even the bench players act like they are all that. Dont worry, this will all change with the humble Valeo additions.

RDS and other events that Revs throw do help with giving your kid more visibility. RDS also allows any good player to outshine the pay to play players. Not a bad strategy.

Your story is not uncommon. Look at it this way - he got some decent training in the process and you learned some things as well.

It's not about the program being fully funded either. They are the New England Revolution, that alone will give them access to the very top players within their geographical spectrum. saying you play for NYCFC,NYRB, DC United, Philadelphia Union or any other MLS Youth system gives you instant cred versus a private academy outfit.
                Geesh...idol worship much?

                'Status is immeasurable'?????

Please. If you are considering playing for the Revs, go watch their 16 and 18 year old teams play (not to mention their anemic MLS team). You will witness what the organization does with players that they havecoachfor awhile. IMHO, you will not be impressed and no one will stand out. Postsabout them stifling growth in other threads is accurate. The only high level players they have produced were primarily trained elsewhere.

If you live close by and were confident that your son would get meaningful minutes, it would be tough to turn down. But if your entire lifestyle is going to change, you better make damn sure there is going to be something more substantial at the end of the road rather than simply 'status' only for the moment. Do you want your son to be the best player and well rounded young man that he can be? Or are simply searching for 'status'.

Yes but watching a club team is no different. Club development is no different. Why not have the status and play for the top academy team while playing the same soccer.

not the OP - I do agree that being on an MLS team does give a player much more street cred when it comes to recruiting. It helps get coaches to at least take a look at you - you've got to prove yourself from there on out.

However, I also agree with a common theme that the Revs don't do much with the talent they have practically handed to them on a silver platter because they're an MLS team. They shouldn't be a mid table team in a weak bracket. So if presented with the opportunity to play for the Revs carefully consider that your skills may flatline there, it's a big sacrifice, and if you're not a starter you are giving up a great deal for training that may or many not be much better than a top non DA club.

What does starting have to do with training?

Actually playing in games is part of developmental training. Duh!

You can train all you want, but if you don't get to practice it some of the time in games you're not really learning. And if a coach sees you're not playing much or comes to watch you play and you don't, that speaks volumes.

But if you want your kid to dedicate 10 months of the year and give up HS (and many other things in life) so he can sit on the bench so he can say he "plays" for the Revs, feel free.

                            20% mandated playing time.
Starters are rotated for development reasons.
Positions are rotated at the younger ages as well.
Players asked to play up (so don't nec. start on their team)

Don't think the Revs take "bench" players.

College coaches know all of that. So if your kid plays barely over the required amount, he's a bench player. Every team has bench players. Besides it's a minimum start requirement of 25%, not 20% playing time. In the past the Revs were notorious for skirting the rules, including starting then yanking players.

Four practices a week are mandated also...how often do the Revs follow that?

Look if your kid is jonesing to play for the Revs and is good enough to get a spot, that's great. It is a big accomplishment. Just go in with eyes wide open and consider your next best option carefully. It works out for many but not all.

Now they just don't give the player starts.

Pretty much never. It's usually 3 times per week, but sometimes it's only 2 times per week.

                                Agree 100%
