Thorns have collected about $ 140,000 in fees from 70 paying players. The program cost over a million dollars per year to run. The Florida show case cost the Thorns around $160,000.

It’s less than $200,000 in fees collected from parents. But they also get try out fees and parents also pay for food on trips.

      Flights 4 teams x 18 players x $500 = 32,000
      Hotel 4 teams x 4 rooms x 5 days x $125 = 10,000
      Vans 4 x 5 days x $50 = $1,000
Coaches flight and hotel = $2,000

This one trip Florida trip was at least $45,000.

This discussion of "shortage" seems to presume that there is a debt being racked up, with no identified funds to pay it.

        Which is wrong.

The Portland Thorns/Peregrine are subsidizing the costs of their development academies, both boys and girls. This is a normal cost of doing business for a professional soccer team, even if the other major team sports in the US don't operate in this way.

And yes, the money does come from Peregrine's various revenue streams--ticket sales, concessions, licensed merchandise, television, etc. Some might even come from oysa, though that's likely a drop in the bucket. But this is money that, at the end of the day, won't wind up in Merritt Paulsen's pocket.

          Check your math.

You have to expect this. US Soccer set the schedules and they set them by ability. This is why US Soccer is superior. It’s not about the results.

So Thornz Asylum U16/17 lost to Boston Breakers on a PK caused by a former FCP "B" teamer (couldn't make ECNL at FCP) dumping Boston's forward in the box. Good effort Thornz! And good to see those "B" teamers are getting a chance to play some rec ball somewhere.

Nice effort by the Thornz Asylum U15s this morning. Takes real talent to cough up 6 goals in a showcase where you're matched up with "like vs like" competition...

Wow. Can't we parents at least try to be supportive of Oregon teams, regardless of which league they play in? Best of luck to all the Thorns Academy teams and players!

It’s not about winning. Building character is equally important.

Wow. Says the Thornz Asylum parent who constantly lies about ECNL.

Where is the u15 mom now. Thorns are played by against some of the worst teams in the DA and they are getting their arses handed to them

I am curious as to why you care so much?

Berating players, clubs, programs, teams and coaches does nothing to progress the sport forward in a positive direction. Why don't you start becoming a part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

Not a parent of Thorns nor Ecnl player. Simply support all Oregon girls playing out of state competition. Makes zero sense not to. Best of luck to Thorns teams and Ecnl teams and OYSA teams too!
