This ECNL league move makes an OW / FSA merger more likely. It's only a matter of time before OW folds financially. They're less likely to get players from the outside now and their business model is not sustainable without an influx of players. As ECNL is winning the battle OW would be prudent to accelerate this decision before their valuation looks less desirable to potential buyers.

      wouldn't a CFC/OW merger make more sense?

Gender equality has been a thorn in USSF's side for several years now. The environment paved the way for GDA - in fact, I think they rushed into it as a result. Now they have a mess on their hands.

          Certainly from a geographic standpoint

OW and FSA are geographically too close together

Winning the battle? When GDA was formed approximately 35 clubs fled ECNL for GDA. Now 5 clubs announce that they don't want to participate in both leagues...and you call that winning the battle? Please sir.

Zero chance of that. CFC doesn’t need Oakwood.

Ecnl may have won a battle but will not win the war.

This is stupid. Neither club would give an inch to any, let alone the other. FSA needs OW more than the other way around. FSA is god awful and destined to lose their badge. Oakwood is fine with DA and better without it. They already kill FSA teams, why would they give up anything?

What I believe may happen is that each league may take a dominant role regionally. In the NE, ECNL will have a larger % of the elite player pool. GDA will remain, but without Stars (and PDA in Atlantic), the arguments for GDA attracting the best talent are even more watered down. When you are left with just a small # of clubs without significant player pools, you realize that GDA is more niche than competitive as a league.

In places like Southern Ca, GDA may be stronger, unless they decide to roll out their own regional league.

Sure they do. CFC has always expanded through acquisition. Would make sense for OW to be the DA branch

In your tiny mind of the winning only mentality, yes its stupid.

CFC and OW doesn't make sense. Top OW players will never move to CFC United (too far). Top CFC players will never move to OW DA (too far).

FSA and OW makes most sense. Consolidation is what's is needed in CT. FSA and OW's proximity makes the perfect match and they can decide on what badge they want. Doesn't make sense to have both.

What exactly is too far? Lots of top players travel to play on top teams, Bethany is not “too far”, it’s somewhat central.

                            .
The distance is why it makes sense ... they won't steal each other's customers but it consolidates clubs

If you extrapolate that thought then why doesn't CFC and NEFC merge? Distance matters.

The problem is there are not enough top players (customers) to go around. OW and FSA currently split talent. Two top clubs in CT makes sense and consolidating the two that are so close together makes the most sense especially for top players in the Hartford region.

Dunkin Donuts should also hand over their reigns to Starbucks. That makes a lot of sense as there are too many coffee shops in America. This suggestion for one soccer club to merge nicely with another is preposterous! These two private enterprises are not franchises under the same corporate umbrella! There is no reason for either of these money making machines to give up anything without something of substance in return. Seriously, please think before you post these stupid what-ifs that have no basis on anything, let alone reality or profit (which govern both entities).
