Agreed. If she wasn't special, it would have been exposed at the dozens of camps, tournaments, training events that she was playing in all those years. Perhaps a couple of players at her position have taken a leap and are now ahead of her. The coaching staff thinks they see the field better, or are more creative, or better fit a style that they're trying to play. The differences are tiny, at that level.

Some posters here seem to imply that she's been exposed as a fraud. I really doubt that's the case.

Maybe the passion is gone. Skill is one thing but you've got to be driven as well. As others have said perhaps she's thinking about other things and what her next chapter is. Plenty of people burn out, and when you're looking at a professional career with no financial rewards vs putting your effort behind your education? For me the choice would be an easy one.

That's the point, genius. That was proven spectacularly wrong. She did not have the athleticism or pace to play at that level.

No way that was BTDT. He's a huge believer in exceptional talent and genetics. He would NEVER let someone get away with saying that his D's success is due to luck and politics. He'd go off on that one.

BTDT is one of the biggest beneficiaries of this phenomenon. Like anybody else, coaches want to look smart. They don't just watch little kids play - they look for other information. How tall is the dad? How heavy is the mom? Any all-state older brothers? Any HOF'ers in the bloodline? A kid can go a long way on coaches' hunches about their athletic potential. That's before much is even shown on the field. If there is anything good on the field from that point, it will surely be seen. Everyone is primed to see it and expect it. It can take a long time for that aura to fade. MA is exhibit A. Exhibit B? Watch carefully.

The consequences of losing and coaching changes always get chalked off to politics. Consider that there was probably someone else somewhere feeling that politics were what was keeping them off the NT while MA was on it. It is all a matter of perspective.

Still say it's politics. Not dirty politics, but politics nonetheless. She was literally being groomed for the US WNT until new management took over. I might even say the same for KM unless someone can prove differently. Different coaches see different things in different players. That doesn't mean MA or KM are any less of a player. It just means that at the moment they don't fit the mold as this particular group of coaches see it.

Also, the smug illogic--that MA's current status under a different WNT regime is an accurate indicator of her being greatly overhyped all along--is a dead giveaway. He's too dense and self-absorbed to realize that his kid, and virtually any phenom, could end up in a similar situation down the road.
