    Winter Tournaments....who would have known

    Manhattan Tournament- Cancelled
    Scorpion Bowl- Cancelled

The Manhattan tournament is in its 4 or 5th year and this is the second year in a row that the entire thing is cancelled.
The Scorpion Bowl has been on a downward decline for a number of years, perhaps related to the NEFC tournament that occurs about a month later.

Can you believe this??? It is winter and there is snow on the ground. This is an incredible physical happening. Who would have figured this to be the case?? Is this a sign of global warming, climate change..............or just the fact that it is Winter!!!!! Has global warming caused the ice caps from up north to make for harsher winters here in the south, or is everything simply getting colder?? Or.......is it Winter!!!!!!

Are clubs and parents so desperate to get their kids out in the cold playing games such that they will continue to sign up for WINTER tournaments on outdoor fields?? The only thing that is more pathetic is that the tournaments hosts do not take full responsibility and clubs lose money by either having to buy insurance and then not play, or to lose 25% because they did not buy the insurance. This does not even include plans that were made by the families to keep the weekend open and whatever necessary travel and lodging expenses were made.

Does playing a winter tournament outdoors in New England make any sense at all? If so, then what is the purpose and ultimate gain? Is it to get 3-5 more games in during the season? Is it to toughen up your kids by having them play in the cold, wet, wind, and snow? Does anyone really think that their kids will be better players by playing in a winter outdoor tournament in New England? I thought that experts were downplaying the need for more games??

Perhaps Okaroh and the Blazers have it right by playing in Disney and Arizona during the winter months. The amount of snow down in these two places is significantly less than New England during the Winter............as amazing as it might sound.

I, for one, am glad that we made no arrangements for either tournament.

Nice diatribe, but you do realize Scorpion Bowl was not canceled right? Just a handful of divisions. 90% of the tournament is going on right now

Never let the facts get in the way of a good, multi-paragraph rant. ;-)

We've been spoiled for a number of years with 'decent' weather for these pre-season tournaments, and the past 2 years have just been brutal.

My son's club is scheduled to play the NEFC tournament in a few weeks, and we are hopeful they'll get to play, but if not, it's winter in New England, and 'stuff' happens

Teams want and need to get out and play before outdoor season starts end of March. Far better to chance playing in New England on turf fields in March than deal with muddy terrible fields in Virginia. Plus a lot less expensive.

For others who can afford it, indoor play on nonboarded synthetic grass fields is a great alternative with none of the risk of bad weather. Our club team practices twice a week indoors and also participates in indoor jamborees instead of playing outdoors the next two weekends.

Pleading ignorance.....what is the great 'need'? So they can ramp up for the Spring season and win, win, win? Perhaps for the older ages, I can see some of this 'need' to win the championship, but I see little value for younger age kids, who, by the way, have their brackets always cancelled first.

I chuckle at the British and Southern European coaches that bring the mindset of playing outdoors through the winter in New England, especially this season. Indoors or Florida/Arizona type state is the only thing you should plan on.

Can we all line up in a row and each take a whack at this dead horse one more time?

yes, yet another thread, please...bottom line is if you schedule an outdoor tournament this time of year you stand a good chance at having issues...even with a "plow guarantee".. Buyer beware.

What the poster who keeps on with these rants against winter tournaments doesn't seem to comprehend is that if it weren't for events like the Scorpion Bowl you can bet with a high degree of certainty that these clubs would be trotting their teams down to Florida or out west to prep for the upcoming season and recognize that the cost for that is actually a hell of a lot more than the 25% "restocking fee" the tornaments charge.
