Based on my experience teaching at one for a few years, that's a bet you would lose every time.

Not sure which prep you taught at but look at the rosters of most of the top soccer schools (South Kent, Berkshire, Lawrence, Worcester, Loomis, etc.) and you will find a large number of international students who are at those schools because they were offered scholarships (financial aid, call it whatever you want) to play soccer there.

The same is true for the AAA, AA, A, B basketball schools. Those kids are there because they were recruited to play that sport there. The nice thing is that they reap the academic benefits of the prep school while there.

That may be somewhat true of those schools but not the case at all....there are hundreds of prep schools. That's like saying Newton Public Schools are representative of all MA public schools.

Based on my experience driving trucks and waiting on tables.... How would your being a teacher give you any insight into this question? Are you the kids' confessor too? Tell me you are a parent, a student, a brother or even a coach and I might take your seriously.

That is very wrong. Most of the students attending prep schools are thinking academics first and sports or other activities next. There are no scholarships, many prep school students are well rounded and excel at academics and sports.

If you really think prep schools don't give scholarships you are crazy.

Only if you that that special "IT" factor, right? Wonder if that will still be true when the "Girls DAP" starts and the girls can't play for the prep school anymore, LOL? Do you want to go on record that the ISLs give athletic scholarships?

This might just be a matter of wording. Specifically, like d3 colleges, no student receives financial aid ("scholarship" is too loose, meaning different things to different people) based on their ability to play a sport. But, students that a prep school really wants because of their ability to play a sport may be offered financial aid based on need, merit or perhaps desire to build a class with characteristics the school desires. To many, any time a sport-playing student pays less than full cost of attendance, it means the school is awarding "athletic scholarships." Maybe there's enough wiggle room in the system to let each school suit themselves.

But these schools would be taking a huge risk giving out money like that to "trust funds" kids, right, BTDT? What school would want to be the focus of a Globe Spotlight series? And even if such schools are cutting the price by 15-20K, they're still expensive with a price tag north of 50K. So even at 30K per year, 4 years adds up to 120K. No wonder some need a college scholarship after spending more than the total costs of an elite private college just to get there.

If you think that they DO then you are ignorant. Financial aid isn't an athletic scholarship even if you run around the track really fast. Give it up, mom and dad. You got money because you don't earn enough.

Or, you have to claim you got a lot of money to save face when spending all day complaining about how others spend money on club soccer or make allegations about the wild costs of certain clubs.

Sorry your kid wasn't good enough to get any money for sports.

This is an ignorant statement made, no doubt, by a parent who does not have an exceptional athlete at a New England prep school. There are many prep schools that offer extraordinary financial aid because a student is a top athlete regardless of how much or how little the parents make. In fact, prep schools often match or beat offers from other prep schools if they want the student athlete enough.
