    DAP vs ISL

If your 8th grader had a chance to play for a top 10 prep school in the fall (Groton, Andover, Milton or similar), or a mediocre DAP team, which would you choose?

Ah, the problems the elites have to deal with are so gut-wrenching.

OP here. He is 5'8", average build.

We are part of the struggling middle class, & couldn't afford prep school without generous FA, but he wants to attend a top academic college and play soccer. What we hear from friends who do DAP, is that DAP has the market pretty much cornered, when it comes to putting kids on good college teams.

Not necessarily - plenty of prep kids play in college. And in the long run what matters most is his education. Take the money and run...

You said your son was offered a spot on a average DAP team so than means not the Revs. Some college coaches are figuring out the MA situation and are aware that good players are choosing not to play DAP. Depends if your son is thinking D1 or D3. If he is not playing for the Revs, D3 is probably the path he is one. The ISL and playing on a VERY good non-DAP club team will do better than DAP on getting a good player, one that cannot make the revs, into a top academic D3 college and possibly an Ivy. More importantly if your son is looking at one of the demanding academic ISL schools (Milton, BB&N, Nobles) it will absolutely help in the preparation for a top academic college. If the opportunity is offered to him and your family to attend an ISL school take it.

Get him a very good tutor instead. Going down the path you describe, by the time you are done with high school and DAP you will have paid the equivalent of 6 years of college and your son will likely end up in a non scholarship situation. Save your money for college, sounds like you are going to need it. The impact a prep school will give your son is over rated so take the free education at your local public school and use your limited money to spoon feed him what he will need to score 2200+ on the SAT's. That will provide many more opportunities in life than your plan will.

Totally agree. Poster above is way off base. And if the family resides in a town with a mediocre high school then the choice is easy. Take the money and run indeed!

I heard D3 colleges don't give athletic scholarships. Is this true? If so he will need to rely on his academics to get any kind of aid to a D3 school, right?

the top Bolts players also make D1 schools - at least 30% if not more go the D1 route

Nice try. If he needs financial aid to go to an ISL he'll get similar aid at a D3 (unless of course he isn't going to an ISL on one of those "full boat" athletic rides).

...so need-based not athletic based scholarships at D3 schools. Also unless he isexceltional, seldom will an ISL give a full ride-no matther what the need- they have to divy up the available aid and there are many who are in need. He'll need to fork up some dough- usually at least $10-20K

But why spend all of the time, effort, and money on DAP? Why not just focus on being the best student possible? Based upon what has been written soccer isn't going to do anything for this student and going to an ISL school does come with a dirty secret, the elite colleges only take so many students from the same school. If that type of college is the true goal, many students would be much better served going to their public high school and placing near the top of it's graduating class than coming out of an ISL even if they ranked in same spot because of admissions quotas. Unless you are in the top 5 in the class at a prep school you end up competing against all of your classmates who are all generally applying for the same admission spots. If the kid is smart and a hard worker in the classroom an ISL type school is really unnecessary and in fact may hamper future opportunities.
