Tim Howard: The Foreign Players Didn't Have the Passion for the MNT

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...mann/96689094/

One of Jurgen Klinsmann's biggest failings was that he tried to change America and make it like the rest of the world instead of building on what once made America great. A big part of this was his insistence on importing foreigners when Americans were hungry to do the job. Tim Howard speaks out on these failed policies and what Bruce Arena is doing to make America great again.

Love Tim Howard, but he is completely wrong here. The US does not have a hustle, or heart problem. It has a skill and ability problem. Klinsman saw that and tried to correct it by getting players that are forged in Europe and the crucible of a real soccer environment. The US does not have a real soccer environment yet and the players have cush set ups in MLS.

The MLS is still a subpar league and until is rises to even a decent second tier league, you shouldn't get your national team players from the MLS. Would England pick all of its players from the third division instead of EPL? Would Spain pick its players from the third division in Spain instead of La Liga? The answer is NO. If we have players in Europe in Bundesliga, EPL or other top leagues, they should be called in.

Let the best play and don't worry about the heart or hustle, we have enough of that.

I think your missing Tim Howard's point! He didn't say to avoid players like Pulisic and others that play in other leagues besides the MLS. Howard never said to get MLS players only. His comment IMO was directed at players like Jermaine Jones, Fabian Johnson and others that weren't even raised or have never spent much time in America and that their only connection to the United States is that their mom or dad was born in this country.

Bruce Arena brought us to the quarterfinals where we were knocked out by a racist referee refusing to call a handball on the goalline.

The issue with Klinsman is he'd rather play a lesser talented foreigner than a better MLS player. Nagby, Feilharber, Nguyen, and others all deserve shots. If it wasn't for Borrussia, Pulisic would be in college not getting call ups. He doesn't have the eye to judge talent. That was his problem. Timmy Chandler. Enough said.

Nagby, Feilhaber, Nguyen are not good enough and don't deserve a shot. You know how I know that, THEY ARE IN THE MLS. Anyone in MLS must be looked at with a skeptical eye. If you are good then WTH are you doing in the MLS? If you are any good at all, you will be in Europe. A second or third division player from Europe is better than MLS.

If Puliscis was in MLS or college, he wouldn't be as good as he is now. Playing and fighting for time in the first team at Borrussia Dortmund is making Puliscic what he is. He is playing in front of 80K a week fighting for time against Goetze, Abamuyang for gods sake. It's apples and oranges. MLS is a beer league compared to Europe.

That fact that you have to go abroad to develop as a pro player speaks volumes about DA and the MLS. MLS is where you return when you're closer to retirement.

Idiots like you think like Klinsman. Landon Donavan and Clint Dempsey had years in the MLS when they were better than any foreign player in US squad. You really believe Pulisic wouldn't dominate these leagues and have the same talent. The US developed him not Borrussia. While he is still improving his formative years were here. Messi can come to MLS and he would remain a top player. Only people like you would ASSUME he is not the same. You know what happens when you assume.

Let's be clear - the MEN'S team sucks. The Women's team has won time and again and defeated the world's best to do so. There is a simple reason the men's team sucks - and that is because soccer will never be a top tier sport here. Its for little rich white kids who can't compete at real sports like baseball, football, basketball or individual sports like swimming and track. If America's best athletes played soccer from a young age, if America supported college soccer like college football, if American sports fans generally cared about soccer, then the men's team would improve. Until then its best to play a foreign sport with foreign players.

You got a 90 mph fastball? Didn't think so. In any event, the proposition stands, your creative use of language notwithstanding. Baseball attendance, television coverage, professional salaries and support by sports fans dwarfs anything the MLS and National Team could ever dream of. Look at the stands during games. The bottom line is that soccer in this country on the men's side of things does not attract the same quality athlete. Why work 20 years to become an MLS player if you have the size, speed and ability to play an American sport? Twenty years from now everyone will still talk about Chicago and the last world series, no one will ever remember the history of an American soccer team.

21,000 per game in Miami and 15,000 per game in St. Pete. Way less than Orlando City, the other MLS teams, and even most NASL teams.
