    Club Soccer for the Poor

What is a good club for kids who can not afford club soccer but wish to play more soccer than town programs offer?

    #2
I haven't had to take one up on the offer, but pretty certain most/all offer some type of aid if the player is worthwhile.

Some will even say if you are paying, you aren't really good enough. I guess we aren't good enough, or poor enough, as we pay.

Many of the clubs offer scholarships for families that can't afford it. It can be partial or full scholarships. Don't be afraid to ask as most clubs have some sort of program, even the small ones.

Many clubs will have a scholarship here or there for a player that is more talented than the rest/brings something to a team. So you'd need to find somewhere your kid is above the rest. Or they'll have a need based scholarship here or there as well. At a decently run club you'll need to prove hardship so if you're uncomfortable providing tax returns then that isn't for you. Some clubs do just charge less, but that often (not always) can mean weaker coaching or fewer practices.

You could check out Town Select League, District Select and ODP on the Mass Youth Soccer website. All are relatively affordable.

ODP is not affordable, it's more expensive than any club except maybe GPS

Club soccer is strictly for two types:
              Type A: way beyond average
Type B: average to downright stinks

Type A typically plays for free or next to nothing, gets top coaches, starts every game, gets lots of play time, and is offered supplemental opportunities to advance their skill. Type B pays top dollar, gets bumped around, has inferior coaches, rarely starts, rides the bench plays in low quality tournaments, gets very little opportunity to advance their skill, and most importantly funds the cost of Type A players without ever complaining. So if you happen to be in need and a type B player better just find another activity. Club soccer is a business like any other.

It's been proven on here many times that GPS is not the expensive club it's portrayed to be, compared to others. Just another way to slip in the GPS slam...

Being in club soccer the past 6 years with 3 kids, the consensus amongst parents is that GPS is the most expensive club. Maybe the first year at U12 is not bad. But after that introductory period, isn't it like $2,5000-$3,000 per year by U14.

$1300 + kit, gone up about $100 per year since we started, and will go down a little less than $100 over the next few.

I have had 4 kids in club over the past 10 years across 3 different clubs. One kid is still in club and happens to play for GPS. GPS is up there, but the other two clubs where just about the same when you add everything together. I've heard of other clubs that are more expensive, but no proof.

That's a knucklehead response. The most important consideration in club soccer is politics. Those who feed the beast get placed and played and those who don't are ignored. Has less to do with talent and more to do with politics, daddy coaches, and petty in-fighting....that's the reality of club soccer and that's why U.S. Soccer is abysmal.

Check the MYSA website which prominently lists the fees- maybe it's not "relatively affordable", but it's not more than many, many clubs.

Wow--coming to TS for some friendly advice doesn't really reflect well on your ability to talk to real people, but then you probably know that. Sorry. Anyway, let me show you how to get welfare benefits for the luxury item that is Club Soccer. First, assuming your kid actually plays town and you are not a troll, find out if any of the townie kids play club. Checking out their backpacks and club gear is one way to do this, especially if you passed down the Asperger gene and your kid is too socially awkward to actually speak to the other kids. Looking at the window decals and car magnets in the lot can also identify your club targets--er--parents. (Also, make note of the make/year of the vehicles. That will be important later.) Once you figure out which kids are with which clubs you are ready for the next step: evaluating the talent level. You should probably invest in a clipboard and some lined paper here. Rank the talent level of the Club kids, and with a dispassionate eye, assign your child an honest ranking. Draw a line where your kid falls in the pecking list, and DISREGARD all those below him or her. This may not immediately make sense to you, and I can hear you ask "Wouldn't the Club want to scholarship a kid who is better than their average?" NO NO NO. If your player was going to get any charity based on his ABILITY someone at the Club would have already recognized his talent and you wouldn't be here trying to game the system. It is not the Club we are targeting: It is the Pocket of the other Parents that we are trying to Pick, and the LAST thing any of these suckers--I mean parents--want to do is bring in anyone better than their Little Landon. You don't want to alienate your sources of largess.
NEXT TIME: ZEROING IN ON THE TARGETS.

2 other clubs that cost more than 3k? Which ones?

Previous thread mentioned only a handful of clubs that are north of 2k:
Stars, NEFC, CSU, Best, Abby Villa. And FC Boston approaching 2k.
