LOS ANGELES - The 2017 NWSL College Draft was held on Thursday at teh Diamond Ballroom at the JW Marriott in downtown Los Angeles. As the league enters its fifth season, the 10 franchises engaged in a four-round draft to replenish the talent in the league for the upcoming season.

Wisconsin star midfielder Rose Lavelle went with the first pick to the Boston Breakers. She was the first of four picks in the first round for the Breakers. The North Carolina Courage selected BYU forward Ashley Hatch with the second overall pick. Breakers made their second selection of the day with the third overall pick with Morgan Andrews. The midfielder started the run of players from the Conference of Champions.

Following Hatch and Lavelle, the Pac-12 dominated the proceedings in the first round. The Conference of Champions developed six of the last eight selections in the First Round including three from NCAA College Cup Champions USC. Andrews was the first off the board and Kayla Mills went next to Sky Blue FC. Maddie Bauer, Stanford went sixth overall to Seattle Reign FC.

UCLA forward Darian Jenkins was a bit of a surprise with the seventh overall selection to NC Courage. Jenkins broke her leg during her senior season and was wearing a walking boot at the draft on Thursday. If she returns to the level she showed before the injury, she will be a great pick-up for the recently relocated franchise.

California midfielder Ifeoma Onumonu and USC defender Mandy Freeman closed out the Pac-12 contingent from the first round. Jane Campbell and Katie Johnson were selected in the second round as the Pac-12 ended up developing eight of the first 20 picks, which is by the far the best return of any conference from this draft.

The Return of the 2012 U17 World Cup Team

The aforementioned Bauer, Freeman, Andrews, Jenkins and Campbell were all part of the U.S. U17 Women’s National Team during the 2012 World Cup. Toni Payne (FC Kansas City), Margaret Purce (Boston Breakers) and Claire Wagner (NC Courage) were also selected in the first two rounds of the draft and made it eight players from the team to be picked in the first 20 selections of the draft.

That team was eliminated in the group stage of the Youth World Cup, but the identification process seems to have worked with Albertin Montoya’s team, as he selected those players who will now move onto helping the NWSL league. The group has not been as successful in breaking through to the full National Team though. Campbell is the only one in the mix lately, but the rest could prove their worth on the big stage and catch the eye of Jill Ellis and her staff in 2017.

    No International Pipeline

Katie Johnson (Mexico), Lindsay Agnew, Kailen Sheridan, and Nichelle Prince (all with ties to Canada) were the only players with international ties drafted in the first three rounds on Thursday. Johnson, who has dual citizenship, went off the board with the 16th overall selection to Seattle Reign FC. The striker shot up the draft board after winning the 2016 College Cup Most Outstanding Player on Offense. Sheridan, the only one holding without dual citizenship, went with the 23rd selection to Sky Blue FC. Agnew and Prince, both dual citizens, went with the 19th pick to the Washington Spirt and 28th selection to the Houston Dash respectively.

Wonder how many on this site agree with this statement?

I wonder how long until they tire of playing for 400 people for $20K/year. Good thing some of them have degrees from excellent schools so they can get a part time job at Starbucks to help make ends meet.

The NWSL is the new "participation medal" for parents overly invested in their daughter's athletic endeavors.
