It's called not diving into the murky swamp of youth soccer.

Or you could call it sensible .... i guess it depends whether it is your money or someone else's that needs to be spent to accomplish this.

Building a solid youth foundation/academy underneath the pro team is what seems sensible.
Giving out free tix and clinics to generate interest in the team has been tried by many - and it doesn't work. It says a lot about how ambitious the ownership group is....or how smart they are in building this brand in the marketplace.

It’s doomed for failure to begin with, add in a youth program and you just put the final nail in the casket

If Hartford can’t out draw Tulsa, Ottawa, Rochester, or Charleston you should be ashamed

There is a reason there aren’t pro teams in ct. no one attends and nothing to see. The only way for a pro team to exist and be profitable is if one of the casinos own them.

Those cities have virtually no other pro sports nearby or even much to do. We have how many teams across much more more popular sports in NY and MA? Many of those fans are lifelong die hard fans too. People only have so much time, money and energy to put towards sports fandom. One reason Seattle MLS did so well was it's lack of decent pro sports and a young demographic with lots of people who played soccer (recently ) as kids. Don't get me wrong I hope it works for the soccet community and the city. I just think the odds are not good.

How many pro teams does Hartford have

Mariners are in Seattle, no. They were playing well when Sounders started.

The highest average attendance at those cities are 3800

My bad highest of those cities was Ottawa with 5400. Last I checked they had two pro teams Ottawa Senators and Ottawa RedBlacks

Mid Ct and Western Ma lack the population density to really do anything. It sucks. I havent looked at the data, but intuitively, the markets that do well have more people, so you can drag enough numbers out of a large population to sustain or succeed in one of these efforts.

Seattle is a big city, Hartford Metro area not so much, even if you feebly try to drag Springfield into the sphere for numbers, its too spread out.

It would be nice to have something interesting here, but its not going to happen....

This is a sh-- show. The only person they have hired full time is one of the owners son who looks like he is still a teenager. They have not made any progress or movement.

They have only been a club for a week? What progress are you looking for

                          - Don't they already have over a thousand deposits for season tickets.
                          - Didn't get their scarves all across Fox during WC

                          Signed not the owners kid

Thanks for the info and work pulling that together, thats really cool, any correlation on the "density" of the populaion, ie sq miles, how spread out are they calling the area..... Like vegas is pretty dense than thins out a lot, like desert thin... central ct is spread out.

I just see it as an obstacle if you need to travel an hour to get to a game or whatnot, we dont have good public transport so you have to drive and watch your consumption, or plan on being in traffic, etc. How Foxboro works for the Patriots eludes me, super inconvenient.... if they stop losing thats going to be an issue. Mass has like zero easy to use public transportation... Fenway works fine, trains and buses everywhere... Yankees same.....

Great reply, especially since the guy admitted he didn't look at the data.

Another interesting point - Hartford MSA is #8 (of 280 national MSAs) in terms of per capita income (per 2010 US Census).
