Thoughts on Wheaton's decline?

MIT does seem to be the new queen of NEWMAC.

The Midd issue is interesting - loss of a top flight goalie is a factor, but the lack of offense seems more like a coaching and formation issue.

A team's innate talent is what it is. If it has strong talent, a good coach can capitalize on it. If it doesn't, even the best coach can't compete. Conversely, if it has strong talent, a bad coach can screw up it up nonetheless.

Most leagues/conferences comprise teams with roughly similar talent levels. It's what the coach/players do do with it that makes the difference between playoff contender and cellar dweller.

That is the basic fact that so many fail to grasp, and causes so much discontent and defensive posturing and a whole lot of hot air on websites such as this.

MIT lost to Williams (Williams had 29 shots!!!), got spanked by Tufts 4-0, lost to Lesley, tied Roger Williams at home, tied at WPI and almost lost at Clark (had to tie the game to send to ot and pulled it off in ot). MIT will lose to Babson tomorrow, they will not win the conference tournament and will not go the NCAAs.

Wheaton was elite in the past, made it to the final four. More recently Wheaton has been very good, making the tournament, usually winning a game or two. Lately..... Not so much.

With the regular season winding down any surprises this year? Anyone shocked by things? For me it's a few

1. Wheaton no longer being a contender!
2. Middlebury falling as much as they did from last years final 4
3. The emergence of Conn College

Conn not surprising, new coach is in 3rd year with "his" recruits. Coach has had decent record of NCAA Appearances at prior school.

UMB is not having a great year, is nowhere near being ranked, and has nothing to do with MIT beating Babson. Maybe you shouldn't post at 1 AM after a few cocktails coach. Or should I say assistant coach.

Wheaton is a great team with great players, a great winning history and a great coach. They have had numerous injuries this season but seem to be hitting there stride now with a four game winning streak.
