    Breakers/Scorpions to reshape Eastern MA

Across every segment of business the most prevalent strategy is consolidation.

Synergies are the key to financial growth and security.

Mass soccer desperately needs some level of consolidation if it hopes to build teams that can compete with other states.

This partnership will be an important FIRST step in that direction.

Clubs like Select and Galway will lose their best female players to the Breakers. It remains to be seen what the effect will be for the boys program. My guess is that the parents of girls that transfer will bring their sons also. That will start the boys migration.

Either way this signifies a major shift within the soccer community south of Boston.

Wait. Aren't the Scorpions going out of business? You continue to pick the wrong horses. You couldn't win a coin flip right now.

The question is does the Breakers want this for more than the top teams. Players wil definitely come for the top teams. If they don't make the team they want will they stay. Also the club fees are unknown until you are offered a spot on a team or you get info from a current player's family. What is the draw for the mulls port athlete that isn't interested in playing regionally?

I hate autocorrect. I was trying to say multisport athlete.

Multi-sport athletes become better overall soccer players. The cross training and competitiveness learned in other venues, all contribute in the long run. Smart coaches and clubs recognize the importance to injury prevention and for player development and make roster space for top, devoted, multi-sport talent.

Asking kids to specialize in solely soccer at U13 or U14 is sheer madness, especially when even top teams only practice for a couple hour and a half sessions a week.

I wasn't suggesting only playing one sport. When a player reaches highschool and plays other sports they need to contend with the bonified team rule. If they miss their sports practice or game for a club sport they risk a half season suspension for the first ofence in the spring that could carry over for the fall soccer season. That would be very hard to participate on an ECNL team. They had approximately 5 weekends traveling in their region for games in the spring plus tournaments. The other part of my post was what is the benefit of playing on the Breakers 3rd team U13-U18.

Surprised no one is still not recognizing the obvious. Fred sold out. This is not the Scorpions living for another day, this is the Breakers buying out a dying club to feed their own expansion plans. Clearly the Breakers are interested in building an end to end solution and the Scorpions brand gives them an immediate infrastructure to start with. Why anyone would think the Breakers are going to let Fred run it though? The Breakers are run by an ex-MPS guy who is following the model the Bradley's laid out with MPS. Yes this is going to be great for Mass soccer but it is not going to be good for the Scorpions families. They are now with a different club and located in an entirely new location. Be careful what you are applauding.

btdt, you are shameless. Why do wish for others to be unhappy? FM's exact role, big or small, is not critical to whether the families are happy. You indirectly endorsed the "Scorpions brand" in your post and now they have the Breakers too. Why do you have to take your heartache out of others??? I'm surprised more people don't call you out on this. Very, very classless...and you just keep repeating this over and over, which is even more classless.

That's funny about the different club and different location. My kids will have very familiar coaches and will practice in the exact same location 15 minutes from my house. Things sound the same to me. Why do I care what logo they have on their jersey now?

SOMERVILLE, MA (June 8, 2013) - The Boston Breakers are proud to announce their partnership with Scorpions Soccer Club. With the partnership, all Scorpions girls teams will be re-branded as Boston Breakers Academy teams. The teams range from Under 9, who focus on fundamental training but still play in town, all the way through U23. The teams will compete in the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL), National Premier Leagues (NPL), the New England Premiership (NEP), and the Mass. Premier League (MAPLE). With the partnership, it creates the only program of its kind in the country for women’s soccer.

"We are delighted to partner with Scorpions Soccer Club. They are a large and successful organization known for player development, which matches the Boston Breakers philosophy,” Boston Breakers General Manager Lee Billiard said. “As the partnership and program builds, I believe the development pathway we provide players from an early age all the way through to our senior professional team is one not recognized on the female side. Definitely an exciting future.”

Along with current Scorpions management, Boston Breakers players, front office, and coaching staff will be involved in providing a structured player development path with a heavy focus on player and coach development. Scorpions Soccer Club staff will remain intact and operate the day-to-day business with assistance from Boston Breakers front office.

“Scorpions are excited and looking forward to our new partnership with the Boston Breakers, who are obviously a first-class operation,” Scorpions Soccer Club Director Fred Marks said. “This partnership is something we are going to invest in and make the very best of. We are pleased to be associated with such a professional organization."

The Boston Breakers still remain committed to their town partnerships and the development of their programs and players. On Breakers current town partnerships Billiard said "The Boston Breakers remain fully committed to our relationships with local town/community soccer programs and that will not change. The Breakers Academy will not actively recruit players from our partner organizations. We will continue to work with towns at the younger age groups to continue the development of players within their program."

                          Boston Breakers
Anyone who has ever been involved in a merger knows that the language in the press release is usually very deliberate. The key phrase is "The Boston Breakers are proud to announce their ". That tells you who is in control of the new entity. The fact that they are going to change the name is also significant and tells you about the balance of power. If the Scorpions were going to remain in any control the name would have been shared along the lines of "Boston Breakers-Scorpions Academy".

The big clue as to who will actually be running the new club is laid out in the whole paragraph the defines who is doing what.

Clearly the Breaker's management is the dog wagging the Scorpions tail. In the end the Breakers will go through a reasonable transition period and then make whatever personnel adjustments they feel necessary. That will actually be a good thing because that is where the Scorpions always floundered.

Why didn't you just begin and end with your last sentence? Do you work for the Breakers? Do you really think you are so savvy as to predict exactly how it will play out? Why do you care? Did you predict this happening, regardless of what the name is and who has control? Did you ever consider that FM is getting older and maybe wants less control at this point and to just focus on coaching a couple of teams while doing something very positive for the whole organization going forward? Answer some real questions for once, please.

I'm surprised no one is realizing that nefc missed the boat by not merging or acquiring this "dying" club. Their shot at ecnl effectively died yesterday. Don't tell me they didn't want it they apply every year for membership and get denied. The Scorpions are poorly run and obviously Fred understands he is ill prepared to lead this going forward. I think he made a smart business deal and guaranteed the future of his club.
