Class B Playoffs
Here's an updated version of something I posted at this time the last two years. As always, while this provides a general guide as to which teams might expect to make the playoffs, it also depends on how teams at other Class B schools are doing. The competition from non-ISL schools is heavier some years than others.
----------------------------------------------------
Here's a list of ISL teams that qualified for past Class B tournaments, with seed, ISL finish, and ISL record in parentheses (except for 2009 and 2010, for which I don’t have records):
2017: Brooks (2 seed, 1st in ISL, 11-0-4), MX (4 seed, 2nd in ISL, 10-1-4), Rivers (5 seed, 8-3-4), Groton (7 seed, T7th in ISL, 7-5-3), SM (8 seed, 6th in ISL, 8-5-2)
2016: Brooks (2 seed, 1st in ISL, 13-1), Nobles (3 seed, T3rd in ISL, 9-3-2), MX (5 seed, 5th in ISL, 7-4-3), SM (6 seed, 6th in ISL, 7-5-2)
2015: LA (2 seed, T3rd in ISL, 11-3-1), SM (4 seed, T3rd in ISL, 11-3-1)
2014: LA (2 seed, 1st in ISL, 14-1), Nobles (3 seed, 3rd in ISL, 12-2-1), Rivers (4 seed, 4th in ISL, 10-2-3)
2013: LA (1 seed, 1st in ISL, 12-0-3), Rivers (2 seed, 2nd in ISL, 12-1-2), SM (6 seed, 5th in ISL, 10-3-2)
2012: Rivers (2 seed, T1st in ISL, 13-1-1), Brooks (3 seed, T1st in ISL, 13-1-1), RL (5 seed, 3rd in ISL, 10-3-2)
2011: Nobles (2 seed, 1st in ISL, 12-2-1), Brooks (3 seed, 2nd in ISL, 10-2-3), RL (5 seed, 4th in ISL, 7-1-7), MX (8 seed, 5th in ISL, 8-5-2)
2010: Nobles (3), Brooks (5), RL (6), MX (7), Rivers (8)
2009: RL (4), Thayer (6), Brooks (7)
Therefore, the number of ISL teams making the Class B tournament has varied from 2 to 5. The mean is 3.6.
Meanwhile, here are the Class B teams that finished highest in the ISL among the teams that did not qualify in the last seven years:
2017: RL (9th in ISL, 7-6-2)
2016: RL (7th in ISL, 6-4-4)
2015: Nobles (6th in ISL, 9-5-1)
2014: MX (6th in ISL, 9-5-1)
2013: Nobles (6th in ISL, 10-4-1)
2012: LA (T5th in ISL, 8-4-3) and Groton (T5th in ISL, 9-6)
2011: Groton (7th in ISL, 6-4-5)
So, over the last seven years:
- Every Class B team that finished in sole possession of 5th place in the ISL or better qualified for the tournament.
- Until two years ago, none of the Class B teams that finished tied for 5th or worse qualified for the tournament. However, in the last two years, SM twice finished 6th in the ISL and yet qualified for the tournament, and Groton qualified last year after tying for 7th.
- With the exception of Groton last year with 24 points (and SM which had 23 points in 2016, but there was one less ISL game that year), every team to have qualified had at least 26 points.
- With the exception of Nobles in 2013 with 31 points, every team with 29 or more points has qualified for the tournament.
