I'm not a GK parent but must agree somewhat with whoever your disagreement is sir. I've witnessed some amazing GK's in the npl this fall. I would think if they wanted the commitment level of ECNL then a few would make a ECNL team.

The 03 Weekend Preview (The Cheesy Sports Movie Edition)

The 03 List Guy once again knows what are you thinking:
Does this theme have any connection with the quality of match ups this week(end)? Can these movies really be cheesy if they are good? Can this week really be that bad if we have 03 List Teams playing? Can it be any worse than second session Futsol at Forekicks Norflok? Do certain 03 List teams manipulate league schedules to accommodate out of state tournaments and/or player availability? If you immediately got defensive about the last question does that mean your team does it? Does the 03 List Guy like Rhetorical Questions?

Ok, first things first...what are cheesy sports movies? They are sports "films" that were completely terrible yet incredibly entertaining (similar to great cheesy action movies like "Road House" and "Point Break"). A few caveats before we begin: 1. No Ice Skating themes (That means no Ice Castles, The Cutting Edge, Blades of Glory, or Slap Shot II), 2. No Robby Benson films (One on one, Running Brave and Ice Castles (once again) are out) and 3. No "Celtic Pride" (For reasons that should be obvious to everyone, will not reference as sports movie about abducting a team's best player prior to a big game...) Moving right along....

        GOTW: OVER THE TOP

Aztec v. SSS (Wednesday Night at 8:45 PM at Medford HS)
According to the apropos lyrics by the musical genius Sammy Hagar, "The winner takes it all...the loser takes the fall". Sammy no doubt had this particular game in mind when he composed those meaningful lines. Just to be clear, this isn't a bad game by any stretch...quite the opposite, it's a doozie. Not only does the winner have the inside track to the top of the table for the Fall NE NPL season, but also has an iron clad claim to the top spot on the 03 List heading into Thanksgiving. Let's break it down shall we? Aztec have home field advantage (or at least they chose the ground...Sun Tzu would think this a big advantage). The drive to Buffalo might be easier than the commute to Medford on Wednesday night from the South Shore. Moreover, weeknight games are tricky...different routines, under the lights, distractions galore. The game itself is fascinating, strength on strength with the quicker SSS on display against the more physical (and sometimes chippy) Aztec. Food for thought, was last weekend's game against Albertsons telling? Aztec shut down Albertsons U14 National Team Player (who closely resembles her SSS teammate) during a 2-0 victory. Both teams are playing extremely well...just seems like a draw. Would not be surprised if neither team scored. Thoughts on this game?

        The REPLACEMENTS:

Liverpool FC v. NEFC NPL (7PM tonight at Mass Maritime)
A match up between two former 03 List Teams. Both sides need this game to garner some positive momentum going forward. In the immortal words of Shane Falco (Keanu really nailed this one) "Pain heels...chicks dig scars...and glory last forever." Liverpool win 2-0 in a rain soaked affair.

        AMERICAN ANTHEM

Breakers(NEFC) v. CFC (Saturday at Forekicks Marlborough)
Classic mid 80's sports movie featuring Mitch Gaylord and Janet Jones (Wayne Gretzky's wife). Second best movie about gymnastics...just behind the pure cheese that is Gymkata. Similar to this game, not even the Soviet era Eastern Bloc Judge would score this one higher than a 5.0. The Breakers have little or no problems sticking the landing against lower tier ECNL teams (CFC has already surrendered 26 goals in league play). No way CFC stays with them on turf. Just too much offense for CFC to contend with. 5-0 Breakers.

The Bad New Bears Breaking Training:

The NEFC November CUP this weekend.
"Let them play...Let them play...Let them play"

Ok, so most of the heavy hitter aren't showing, BUT, still 03 List implications. SPOL should have little trouble coming out of Bracket A (I know you are missing a player, but still...). Liverpool should come out of Bracket B, although, a little more difficult road with FCUSA and Seacoast Unite Maine on the schedule. Expect a Liverpool and SPOL finals. And no Tanner like outbursts from the sidelines!!!

Remember, you can't see what is on the other side if you don't go OVER THE TOP

Results move the 03 List...and Lincoln Hawk

My favorite list guy regrettably is off in a "Not so Cool Runnings" fashion as in a classic "Waterboy" setting (see what I did there) the girls of Nefc NPL "Slap Shot" their way past the girls of Liverpool 1-0.

The game was hard fought and our team looked to have the run of the table in first half and some scary situations for Nefc in the second BUT the nefc GK has proven she was a cast member in "A League Of Their Own"

Open auditions in Plymouth...Nefc GK' !

Here's Vegas's original post again. List Guy, you're getting there. If there is any adjustment since original post, FCB takes over 5 and GPS falls to 6. I'm also intrigued by SPOL, who may earn the #7 soon.

            1-2. SSS, Breakers -
            3-4. Aztecs, Stars -
            5. GPS -
            6. FCB -
            7. Stars West -

Come on, do you really think Stars West has been stronger than Stars ECNL, or did you not read your list over prior to posting?

If Aztecs beat SSS, they earn #1. Lose, and Stars takes over #3.

            Notes and Logic:

The 03 List Guy knows what you are thinking, "Great googly moogly! It's not Tuesday night already, is it? Did I oversleep? What's the meaning of this? The 03 List...ALREADY? IT'S F@#&ing MONDAY MORNING?" Believe it gentle readers...believe it.

            Let's get to it!!!

SSS: Hold serve and keep the number one spot with a 5-1 dismantling of Liverpool FC (um...Liverpool...the Relegation Zone is a real thing...just saying) and a solid 3-0 road win over Bayside FC in the Awful Awful Cup (drink 3 and get the next one free!). Seacoast United's recent poor form in NPL League play has left the door wide open for SSS and Aztec. Wednesday's SSS and Aztec match should decide the top of the table for the Fall NE NPL.

Breakers(NEFC): Undefeated at the Phoenix ECNL Showcase: 4-1 win over Heat ECNL, 3-1 over Mustang SC and 4-2 win over FC Portland. At first blush, the 03 List Guy wasn't overly impressed with the Breakers competition (Heat and Portland are not very good). Through no fault of their own, Breakers were not matched up with the Dallas Sting, Michigan Hawks or Penn Fusion. However, the 3-1 win over Mustang SC was pretty good considering the Mustang's beat Penn Fusion 2-1. The 03 List Guy believes SSS CASL Championship was more impressive than the Breakers Phoenix ECNL's wins. Breakers take the #2 spot on the 03 List...it was a close call though.

Aztec: Although Aztec did not win the Bethesda Cup, the 03 List Guy liked what they did this weekend. A statement win against Albertsons ECNL 2-1 (the same Albertsons that defeated Stars, FCB and Breakers this Fall), 0-0 tie with Lee Mount Vernon SC LMVSC Patriot 2003 (say that 5 times fast) and a 0-0 tie with St. Mary's. Good weekend earns them the #3 spot.

SIDE BAR: Aside from the top three teams and the team that got relegated, there really isn't much separating the next five. A good argument could be made for any order. The 03 List may or may not have pulled names out of a hat.

Stars West: Did the Aztecs tell you they were going to Maryland? Did you guys show and they didn't? Did they blow you off? Was the game rescheduled? Nothing like previewing a match that was postponed...good times. Can understand postponing for the Hurst United Turkey shoot...BUT the BETHESDA CUP...(shaking head slowly in disagreement while rolling eyes).

FCB: Off this weekend, but the Scorpions ended the Fall ECNL on a positive note with two hard fought ties with Stars and WNY Flash last weekend. Looking forward to the GPS Thanksgiving Tournament (not everyone has the cache to get into the Hurst United Turkey Shoot...oh well, there's always next year).

Stars: Tremendous battle up in Buffalo, but the Stars dropped both games 1-0. Must have been some serious mean-mugging going on from WNY Flash parents. Not much separating these two teams, but it's hard to drive up there and win. 03 List Guy hates the drive to Epping...the 03 List Guy really hates the drive to Buffalo.

SPOL: Off this weekend as well. The 03 List Guy expects you to win the NEFC November Tournament...or else (no pressure).

GPS: This weekend stung. 0-1 loss to McClean ECNL, 1-1 draw with Stars NPL and 0-2 loss to AFFC Force. Bad weekends and tournaments happen...expected more. Chance to get back on track at the Thanksgiving Tournament.

Liverpool FC: Relegated...but look at it this way (The 03 List Guy always has a silver lining). The last time you got relegated you won a tournament the next week. As luck would have it, the NEFC November Tourny is this weekend. Here you go...chance to crawl out of the dreaded relegation zone.

Results move the 03 List...and Dunkin Donuts Ice Coffee (don't forget the hot cup)

For the record...Even with the National Player from Albertson they had zero shots on goal the whole game.

Tonight's game, weather permitting, is going to be about an offensive minded coach versus a defensive minded coach. It is about a team that can score versus a team that can shut down a scorer. It should be some great soccer. My concern is that it will come down to the coach willing to make game adjustments. There are some very good matchups in the game. Honestly good luck to both teams and all players!

Also think it will come down to the referee. If he/she lets them play, advantage Aztec. If they call everything, advantage SSS. Going to be interesting.

Would not shock me if this landed up a 0 0 tie or was decided by a PK type of call. In any event what you will see is if the two teams are evenly matched or not.

Why are they playing at 8:45 on a Wednesday night? Couldn't get anything later? Young kids prefer midnight, come on Aztecs step it up and get something later. Pathetic. Not one field available.

Albertson's is not the same team that started the season. Albertson's recently tied Connecticut FC 2-2, lost to Match Fit 3-1 and tied Continental 0-0.

I think at the end of the day its going to be all about who has the better Keeper's. Aztec has two solid kids in net. Of course the Coach feels his keeper's are an insignificant part of the team and treats them as such.

Reschedule, weather is terrible and it's an important game.

                        1-2. SSS, Breakers -
                        3-4. Aztecs, Stars -

                        6. FCB -
                        7. Stars West -

Come on, do you really think Stars West has been stronger than Stars ECNL, or did you not read your list over prior to posting?

If Aztecs beat SSS, they earn #1. Lose, and Stars takes over #3.

Hey, where have you been? I had such high hopes that you would be more of a contributor...but I'm glad you're back. Peaches and Herb "reunited". I will say this odds guy, results move the list. My personal feelings on where the teams rank have nothing to do with the weekly 03 List. Do I personally believe stars ecnl are a better team than stars west ? Of course I do, BUT they lost both games last weekend. So they drop. End of story. GPS had a rough weekend, so they dropped. As I remember, you wanted to keep SSS #1 after losing handily to seacoast and drawing with GPS (did not care if they were missing a player...every team is missing important players for one reason or another). The 03 List relies very heavily on weekly results. If you lose...you fall. Just be prepared, if SSS loses to Aztec it probably Means the 4 spot.

I respect the List. No personal feelings with any teams here either. I think the difference with the List versus Vegas odds is consideration of the quality of wins or losses. My style is to assess but not overreact. Teams have to earn the right to take over a ranking spot.

A good win against a tough opponent is the fastest way to up the odds.
An expected win against an underdog is just that, expected.
A bad loss against a weaker opponent is the fastest way down the list.
A loss against a favored team could be an adjustment on the ladder depending on what other teams did on a given week.
No game is a pass unless another team outperforms against higher ranked team.

For example, Stars lost both games last weekend but against a tough opponent. Dropped to only #4 in my book, not to the bottom. #4 spot has to be earned, and no other team did that this week.

SSS is barely holding on to #1 in Vegas. This is how the odds will go under the following scenarios tonight.

SSS win - stay #1, SSS loses drops to #4.
Aztecs win - deserve #1, Aztecs lose, drop to #4.
Tie - Breakers take over #1. Motivation for both teams.

If I recall correctly, that week you refer to GPS beat SSS and then lost to Oakwood. That's why they didn't earn #1 ranking in Vegas that week. Good win and bad loss combined. Stars ECNL has earned the right of way over Stars West, and I will reflect that until proven otherwise.

I track the top 7, might move to 6. Motivation to move up.

Aztecs had a good win against Albertson's at Bethesda but also had two disappointing 0-0 ties.

I say SSS offense wins out tonight.

SSS girls are getting free slusheies at the sports center if they win tonight. That's the deciding factor.....2-0 win for SSS.
