What is league progression supposed to be?

There's A U10 team in a town club that loves playing together in a mid-level LI league. Assume if they click and improve and move up to the top division at U12 at what point should they look for a more competitive league? Which league(s) should they expect to move into at that point? does it matter if that original league is LIJSL or NYCSL? I don't know this because I'm new to LI youth soccer swamp. I'm not looking for the path to make any the kids a pro or D1 all star, I am looking for the path that lets team consistently challenge themselves at an appropriate level so they can continue enjoying the game through HS.

I wish there was a clear path you could plan for but there is not. First, the landscape keeps changing literally every year. New leagues pop up, old ones keep altering, clubs come and go which changes how good or bad leagues are. Also at that age you will see at least half the players turned over by u13-14. Some decide soccer isn't their thing, some families look at the long haul and question the sanity of it all, better players move to the higher leagues, weakening the team because there aren't quality replacements.

Take it all a year at a time. Look out for your own player first and foremost. Keeping a team together is a nice goal but it's rarely a realistic one.

My suggestion. Instead of looking for different league and be stuck there a whole season -> start playing various tournaments and see what teams you can compete with. Than make a decision off of that.

OP: Hmmm, that's a bummer. I can see how being together is what is a big force in keeping this team going at U10, since they've been at it for 2 years now, and I'd hate to have to drop it because others are abandoning ship and we don't have numbers to field a team anymore. My kid is really into it and improving a lot, but if not playing with the people she knows I am not sure that happens.
We have been doing tournaments, and won an intermediate bracket in the fall. I don't think the kids are too far away from being able to enter the top brackets at tournaments, though I'm pretty sure they'll have little chance of beating the semi-pro U10 teams that are out there at this point, even at their very best because we just can't/don't want to train 5-6 days a week the way they do. I'd like to think our club is looking out for us, but in reality it seems they are in it for themselves and are limited in what they can provide, though they'll never admit it.

what does the club have to do with it? Its the coaches responsibility to schedule practices/training. If the coach wants to train 5-6 days week, he gets it done.

If the coach only wants to do 2-3 days of training...thats what it is....

The question is.....WHAT DOES YOUR BRAT KID REALLY WANT? question is strictly rhetorical for you.

It only took 4 posts to get there....and I'm taking the bait...My kid's not a brat. And if YOUR input is strictly rhetorical for what YOUR 10 year old does, then I'm sure IT is as insufferable as you, you filthy animal.

What a marvelous social experiment. Be an *******, then criticize people for pointing out that you're an *******. Move to next thread, do it again.

                  Progression

In my experience the parent admin and the coach have to stear the team to the right league level. If your team is winning consistently in the division you are in request to go up 1 or 2 levels.

Have fun a good season is having tough games and the kids getting better from the start to the end. Keep doing tournaments the kids will remember them most and the solidify the friendship bonds.

At U12 or above it seems that all of a sudden other leagues are available other than LIJSL and NYCSL what ones are there, are they better than these and if so does getting into them depend on which local league you come from?

U12 is when you start seeing player movement to other teams and leagues. Really it's all about how the player is performing. In LIJSL, he or she may be the best on the team, then you try out for an ECNL club and you realize you were the best of a lower lot. Be honest in your assessment of your child. If you see them hanging well at a higher tryout you know they're ready. The club may still take the player to fill spots, so you have to be prepared to play less. But a player can also really improve in that environment since they're being challenged by betier players. You may have substantial travel also.
Lots to consider, go to open practices and honestly assess your child.

Our family situation means that moving "up" to a higher team on a different club would too challenging. Its unlikely we are close enough to a "higher level team" to make such a move feasible because it would take up so much extra evening time travel wise, and I am also afraid of how much extra it could cost (I wouldn't be able to cough up thousands more a year). If we are "doomed" to stick with the club team then I'll just pray it will stick together when U12 comes around.

For many community soccer clubs, coaches are paid by the hour, so it is not necessarily up to the coach to decide how often they practice.
