    Southside Shootout

Did you participate, how was your experience?

I have avoided this tournament traditionally but I got talked into it this year. My sample is small I was only aware of a few happenings across a few teams and I had a player that ref'd a number of games.

I did hear a U13 Championship game was warned by the field marshal if the parents couldn't chill the game would be cancelled and declared a forfeit.

I think all championship games were at Cook Park and I did like that they did awards, pictures, etc. Unlike LO Nike Cup that gave you your stuff in a grocery bag with a slap on the back.

No food at Cook Park. Or any other venue I was at. Other than Dippin Dots. I think letting a few food trucks know would take care of the problem.

I did notice a few late arrivals to the tournament scene signing up for their first tournament. And/or some "new" TTL teams. Just looking at scores and names, maybe some smaller community clubs moving from rec to TTL. I think those kinds of teams really need to hit the bigger tournaments to ensure they are getting in a real Bronze bracket. Because when you go to a tourney like this, you'll have combined brackets and you may end up with some lopsided matches. Just say'n.....

I'm very pleased I got 4 "competitive" games. Seemed to run about as well as any other PDX area tournament. Glad they did awards and photos.

            Plusses:

            * Cook park is a nice venue, with nice fields.

            * Generally was well-run.

            Minuses:

            * Parking was occasionally a problem. (And I suppose a lack of vendors, though I generally don't buy food/drink at tournaments. Bridgeport Village is only a mile down the road). And many of the parking stalls are tiny.
            * Referee quality was uneven; one ref in particular was terrible. (Terrible for both sides at least, but clearly was not familiar with the Laws of the Game).
            * The way the awards photo stand was set up was annoying--it was in a cordoned off area so that ONLY the professional photographer hired by the event could get an unobstructed shot from the front. Parents could only shoot from the side, or try to zoom in from distance. It seemed obvious that this was done deliberately; other tournaments (Clash) did hire professional photographers to take team photos on the medal stand, but made no attempt to prevent parents with snapping photos with their phones.

              Teenage, older?

My experience this summer ref coordinators have been very proactive working with referees - especially the teenage ones to ensure competent / quality referees.

I did have an irritating ball to hand "handball" but it didn't effect the outcome and I think this is a constant referee discussion ....

Did LO Nike Cup so seemed like the same tournament in the sense I was in Wilsonville and Tigard.

Small so congrats to those teams that go competitive games. 4 game minimum a plus. Pins and meaningful award ceremony also a plus.

Food Trucks. If I have a few hours between games, I'd like to grab some food and stroll around. Plus, if I leave I may never find a parking space.
