DA / High School player rules

Does anyone have any actual knowledge or experience with this?
From what i have read/heard, it seems there is a rule that if you choose to play for a DA team, you cannot play on your high school team. But there seems to be an exception made for private school students? If so, why? That doesn't sound fair.
Also it seems from past threads that there are even players at non-private schools who are playing both?
Who sets the rules? DA? Club? And what would they do if a player just says "I'm going to do both and I'll just make the scheduling work"? Can they even really enforce it?

    Best I can discern:

-Private school kids can get waivers because playing sports is often part of their school. Public doesn't have that stipulation. Not fair, but that's life.

-I believe last year their may have been a wink-wink that allowed some public school kids to get a waiver. That is clearly not what it is intended for, but I heard it happened. No direct confirmation myself, mind you.

-It's plausible that a DA player could play HS and after the season, be rostered to join the DA team. You can add an un-rostered player up until April, so this could be a way to skirt the rules. I think it goes against the spirit of the rule, but not the black-and-white interpretation. It also could create a little angst with existing players who played all along only to be bumped later on.

-The rules are actually in place by both USSoccer and NHIAA. You cannot play for another team if you are playing for an NHIAA team. How it's enforced? Likely only if someone was injured or a parent/teammate was upset about someone double-dipping.

I should note, this only applies to soccer. You can run track, play lacrosse, etc. if you can find the time.

Documented cases of it happening last year and I hope that it stops this year for the sake of all involved.

If ECNL players can play HS, I don’t see the big issue with academy players doing so as well.

Apples and bowling balls. DA is year end scheduling while ECNL is Spring mainly. Plus it's mandated by DA, so there's that.

Totally different philosophies in development. Up to each family to decide what is right for them.

But, to the leaders of each of those organizations, it is a big deal.

              Agree totally.

Preps often recruit for specific sports and most require a sport in every season in order to graduate.

Def DA clubs let players play HS and then add them to the roster post HS season.

Is this really true? As long as you attend every High School team activity (practices, games, meetings), the NHIAA and/or school cannot prevent you from doing anything you choose to do in your own time, right? Even if you choose to play on another soccer team during the Fall. Surely it's up to the club/DA to enforce the rules...?

Clearly it's ok to do both.
Last season a player from Londonderry HS did exactly that.
And it wasn't exactly quietly under the radar.
She scored 2 goals in the semi-final to send them into the state final.
If the NHIAA or the school had an official policy against it, there's no way this could happen.
Their opponent would have objected to an illegal player.

Yes, you are correct and I erred. Our SCHOOL has the policy, but the NHIAA policy is below:

"A member of a school team is a student athlete who is regularly present for, and actively participates in, team tryouts, practices and competitions. Bona fide members, as of the first date to practice in that sport as listed in By-Law Article XXXVIII of the NHIAA Handbook, of a school team are prevented from missing a high school practice or competition to compete with an out-of-school team, practice or competition to include tournaments, showcases, combines or other athletic events.

Whenever a conflict arises between the high school team practice/competition and an out-of-school practice/competition on the same day, the high school team practice/competition must be honored by the student athlete. Priority must be given at all times to the high school team, its practices, and its contests unless a waiver has been granted by the principal and athletic director. It is expressly understood that waivers shall not be granted on a regular basis and shall only be granted in extraordinary circumstances."

So essentially, as long as you prioritize and don't miss any NHIAA/school related activities, what you do outside they don't care about.

Was she rostered and playing for her GDA team at the time? (I'm not familiar so I'm asking, not questioning...the way T/S works sometimes I feel the need to say that!!)

FWIW, that same player also played multiple games during the DA Fall season so she wasn't just a "I'll join you after the HS Fall season is over" player. So which is it? Basically sounds like the players can decide themselves whether they want to do both. Some parents may not want to put their kids' bodies through such rigorous training for 3 months.

I can confirm she shows up on the rosters for 2 games in the Fall for a total of 77 minutes; both games were very early in the season (first two I believe).

Not sure if there was an action to stop it or what happened but she didn't appear on any game-day rosters after that until school season had ended.

Not saying it's "legal", just reporting what I see.

That makes some sense... Probably got “caught”, hand slapped and didn’t play in any other games until after school season ended. That’s my best guess anyway.

3 games - also played in a DA game on Oct 13th.
All pretty easy to see in the game reports: http://seac.ussoccerda.com/sam/teams/index.php?team=7649396
