    Scammin’ Creek Nike Cup

And here comes yet another recreational tourney hosted by a small recreational club.

67 teams are scheduled to play. Some age groups have only three teams.

Don’t these people know that the market is saturated? There’s too many tournaments already.

August is a rough time. Classic Tourney Mt. Hood Challenge to start it off....Summer Slam to finish it off... How many tournaments does anyone team do?

Redapt, Chinook Cup (Southside Shootout) it's a busy month. High School soccer is in full swing. Daily Doubles... it's kind a hard to get anything U15-U19. Who wants to play soccer 4 hours a day all week after running around your school for an hour and then play a Tournament. Um nobody.

FWIW, I did this tourney last summer and had a good time. Although the glue used in the pin was crap and the face fell off. All my girls have a pin with a drop of glue now.

So? Rec and lower-division classic teams like to play in tournaments too. Not everything has to be Surf Cup.

And you care about this why?

There's too many CLUBS, if anything. But really--the only person I can imagine despairing about another clubs tournament offerings, is a DoC or similar upset that their clubs own tournament isn't drawing well.

Which is understandable--a tournament is part of many clubs' fundraising, and there are only so many weekends in the summer.

But if I'm not a club director, why would I care about the Salmon Creek tournament? My DS's team isn't going, so it is irrelevant to me. Doesn't mean that I think it should be scrapped.

Preach brother. Lot's of jelly clowns on TS. DOC from FC $$$$ hocking D1 USWNT dreams to ensure they don't have to get a real job. Got to put down the competition hoping to $ecure your money.

This tournament is just fine and as good as any other. Only issue I see with smaller tournaments is you may not find the competition you are looking for. Bronze wants to play bronze, Super wants to play Super.

They are really still going through with this tournament?

Why wouldn't they? It would cost the club a lot of money were they to cancel, and the clubs who did sign up would be rightfully annoyed. Sorry if it doesn't meet with your approval, though.

I actually feel bad for the situation they are in. You can't cancel this late in the game, especially for those travel teams who are coming from out of town. However, you really have to ask yourself a difficult question after this season if its a good idea to host this tournament anymore.

Sounds like it's going to be fine.

As long as they have decent fields, portapotty's, hoody tent they'll be fine. If they get a couple food trucks to park around their venues even better.

The danger is a team that doesn't find fair competition and decides not to return. It sucks, but if you're winning by 5 goals, probably have a team that wanted to play bronze, or maybe you should have been silver. Need to manage those appropriately (ie not run up the score). I ended up at the Woodburn Tournament that was very small but I had a equal bracket and they put on a good show - maybe SC does the same.

You nailed it on the head. Ideally I would have more than 4 teams at an age group, but even then the question is if the competition is going to be good or not. Thats the issue though with 4 team groups, if thats the only division its likely that 1 team is going to run over the rest.

                        Holy smokes!

Upside down and lopsided scores! It has to be hard to join the saturated tournament lineup 15 years late.

I was holding out hope but yeah, didn't look good for some. Nobody wants to drop 700 bucks to either win by, or lose by 10. That's the real danger...is not finding the right competition for your team. Bronze wants to play bronze, gold wants gold.

Saturated market, yes. Are they late to the game and not the first tournament on people's mind, partially. But Woodburn started a tournament this year and they did pretty good so what's the difference? Part of it might be timing. Earlier in the summer. Another part of it is nobody wants to drive up to SW Washington.

And why do SCNC when you can do South Side the week after. And not that Southside is anything special but if you're a PDX area club it's just simple. To play in Wilsonville, or Tigard, etc.

Look for next year clubs/tournaments to be much more organized, advertising, and look for prices to start in the 400-500 range.

They should have advertised it as a rec/select tournament only. Seems like the younger brackets were mostly filled with FCSC teams who were closer to rec level and then got destroyed by the other teams. I watched a team score over 20 goals with the coach having them pass 10 or 15 times before they could even attempt a shot and the kids barely looked like they were even having to try. The club should have told "gold" level teams that there just wasn't competition for them instead of letting the lower level kids get railroaded game after game! It was hard to watch.

                              Well, It's all "rec/select."

Unless you want to advertise the competition and have teams apply or be invited. But that's not going to accomplish what that goal is for this, or every other tournament in the PDX area over the summer. Which is to get their teams games and to raise some money. I don't have an issue with that. Soccer is fun and the weather is nice; might as well spend the weekend playing.

I've been on both ends of this. I've had teams where I had to be real careful about the tournaments I signed up for to make sure we got the experience we were looking for.

I think what you'll find is the teams that got blown out, or the teams that did the blowing out, probably didnt' know what to expect and will probably make sure they pick a larger tournament. So the big tournaments will get bigger and the small ones smaller.

                              A remedy.

Talk to other coaches with teams in your "class" and try to attend the same tournaments.
