Michael Bradley should have cut off the passing lane from Ruiz to Urena. It was too late by the time it got to Ream- not saying Ream is off the hook- (he shouldn't be a starter) but ball should have never gotten to Urena in the first place. Bradley should have turned his head and immediately seen Urena with a direct passing lane from Ruiz and moved to block the passing lane. Simple defensive IQ which is one reason I think Bradley needs to go- he's too inconsistent

Ream is on the hook for both goals. He was out of position as was Timmy Howard

again- not saying he's off the hook. First goal is critical and Bradley is more to blame for that than Ream.

They played like garbage, utter garbage...no doubt about that. A couple thoughts:

1) That team didn't play up to its capabilities, they could have been much better. Some of the mistakes they made last night were just stupid and easily correctable by the players on the field. They just didn't have it last night. No fight, no composure, no consistency. I have to put that on the coach for not having them prepared, as well as for some questionable selections (a la Ream) and waiting too long to get Dempsey and Morris in the game. Neither did much, but bring them in earlier and maybe it makes an impact, because the US was looking capable of getting an equalizer for a short stretch before the backbreaker came.

2) I did think the US had a legit shout for a pen when Waston and Altidore came together when it was still 0-0. I've seen less called, and worse let go, but who knows how the game changes if the US takes the lead there. However, the US needs to do a better job recovering from that, and last night they displayed some petulance and lack of resolve, which does not bode well for a road game in Honduras.

3) Navas...That save on the deflected Pulsic shot was timely and huge. Howard on the other hand was worse than I can ever remember seeing him in a US jersey.

4) We're still simply not good enough overall and everyone had an off night. If everyone was as good as Pulisic at his best, you can get away with it. But if your best player is having an off night (and spending half the game getting knocked on his butt), your other "stars" and role players are having an off night, and your guys who shouldn't be on the field are having an off night, you are in trouble. Costa Rica is good enough and physical enough that they will take advantage of you if you get in your own way.

5) Not about the game, but about the comment regarding pay to play...I'm all for figuring out how to make soccer (and all youth sports) less expensive (and all organizations I know of offer extensive financial aid for families with hardships), but let's say all of a sudden half or more of the revenue generated by player fees was replaced with corporate and philanthropic sources. How will that change the fundamental soccer ability and intelligence problems with the American player? We don't just need a magic bullet that will allow everyone to play organized sports for cheap or free. We need a magic bullet that will get our player pool to improve its technical ability, vision and soccer IQ, passion for the game, time spent playing in unstructured pick up settings. We're just not a footballing nation yet, and cost is only part of the problem.

Allow me to translate all that garbage. Tim Ream sucks. As does any coach who would put him in a game.

first and foremost, I blame the coach. When an entire team plays so badly it has to come from the top. These players need to go in with the right attitude and it just wasn't there last night. I suspect this will change Tues but Honduras playing at home will have the advantage.

They have several players who are the real deal but it's job of the coach to make something out of it. He made nothing.

Arenas is an old style coach not suited particularly well for today's athletes.
Just as telling as a lack of young talent, or maybe even more so, is a shortage of quality in the coaching ranks.
No young keepers?
Same is true in England, save a few, where wash, rinse, repeat seems to be the mantra
(Allardyce, Pardew, Hughes, etc...)

And most important, many athletes in our country do not feel the need or pride to wear the uniform.
