    College ID Camps - thoughts?

Getting lots of summer college ID camp invitations.

Does attendance have any value for development or recruiting or is this stuff a waste of time and money? Are any of these camps better than others and why?

Thanks for sharing experiences or thoughts.

Go to the ones where your kid has a serious interest in attending, and make sure the coach or coaches know about that interest ahead of time.

But, you already knew all that, right?

If it's specific to just one college it can be very valuable. My daughter was recruited by attending an ID clinic at the school she was interested in. She did not have a lot of luck at the camps where they recruit multiple schools, that seemed to be more of a money grab.

My impression from a few of the bigger ones with multiple schools was that the fix was in, insofar as, if a player was already on the radar of said coach, the groupings were not random in any way, shape or form.

Since school ones are good if as said it's a school the player is interested in. Coaches don't have tons of time to watch you at a showcase, you could have had a boring game etc. They want to see you more more time, see how you interact with others etc. Also your kid may be interested in a school that doesn't go to their showcases so there's no other way to be seen.

Same with the bigger camps - if there's multiple schools there that you haven't played in front of it might be worth it (my oldest wanted to go to the midwest so she did one in Chicago and made some good contacts there). But just like a showcase you have to contact the attending coaches ahead of time and try and find them while you're there to talk. Depending on the school they may or may not do their own camps so it's your best shot. But the bigger schools tend to have their own separate events on top of going to showcases and Id events. I don't know about you but we're not made of gold and can't do everything, nor should you. Pick and chose.

Some ask you up front which schools you are interested in

Due to an injury my player missed a critical season for recruiting and relied on ID clinics, focusing on schools which were a good fit academically and soccer-wise (which took some research), with success. Like others have mentioned, contact to the coach prior to the clinic and send them a player profile. Ask your coach if they are willing to reach out too and find out if they are still recruiting players at your player's position and graduating class.

^^^^ there's a million different options out there so chose wisely, focusing on schools that are of interest whenever possible (they also are more likely to be short. Multiday camps are more about who can survive the summer heat longest).

Hopefully this wasn't a thread started by the company above

Just passing along the link. After much unwelcome treatment on TS I spent plenty of time online. Personally found it much more advantageous to shop for colleges locally. The coaches want to evaluate kids independently of their respective teams. Always reach out well ahead of time.

ID camps are a great way to get to know the school and get feedback from coaches. However, remain skeptical of the feedback until you have something concrete in hand.

Our D got pulled aside after a camp and invited for a recruiting weekend as a sophomore.
Coach came to her games during Jr year, followed up with emails and all sorts of praise, said she she'd be a great fit for the team and looked forward to seeing her in the summer.

Our D followed up with request for a pre-read....crickets....now she's reconsidering attending the camp and reaching out to other coaches.

You should always work multiple options when recruiting because you never know where it will all net out. Tell her to not give up with the coach, however. If the reach out was recent many coaches are deep in recruit mode right now and at various national/playoff events like ECNL etc. Try again in another week and copy all the coaches. Fi she's had some accomplishments since they spoke last point them out, tell them what she's doing this summer to train

One thing I tried to do with my kids was to be the (unspoken) skeptic with regard to some of the interest they got from coaches. That is, the "crickets" experience is not unheard of, so I was a bit of a skeptic on some of the interest that seemed too good to be true. By that I mean trying to be objective and realistic about where my kids would slot in on various teams, and then wondering why a coach at BC (let's say) would be chasing my kid when my kid would be a bench player there at best. Maybe the coach sees something I don't, and I wouldn't verbalize my skepticism, but I made sure not too much time was spent on that class of schools. Just like academics, you may want a "reach" or two, but probably spend more time looking in your sweet spot. Some parents (and players) are not honest about where they sit, and others may try but don't have the ability to honestly assess where they sit. Obviously you'd hope your club coach could help, but there's no reason you can't take a look at the roster and playing stats and see if that helps.

I would focus on getting in to college first, once they've decided on school, talk with the coach and-or just show up for tryouts. if -when they make the roster then u can discuss athletic money or scholarship money with coach. May not come the first year but the money is up for grabs every year.
