Some small clubs and travel teams do this. Not done by most of them anymore.

I know of one fairly large club that charged $20. Was the first time I'd seen that.

Seacoast charges $20 but they give you a "free" t shirt.

Sure do. So, when you get a player, charge 'em then.

I was surprised when we looked at Seacoast and saw they were charging for a tryout...

                  Better be a nice t-shirt

Fields are usually booked for the year or at least the season. Tryouts usually happen on what would normally be practice days - clubs don't extend the season to run tryouts so there shouldn't be any extra cost or if so it's minimal. Coaches also have season or year long agreements. Charging for tryouts is a way for a club to cushion their bank account.

One club was named; only one I personally am aware of.

Someone has to pay for the beer and chips while they fill out rosters! C'mon!

Because they can? There are clubs that could charge $50 and lose no one. I'm surprised they don't all do it already. Parents would pay it.
