If all you care about is soccer skip ISL and send them to South Kent, Berkshire or Worcester. In that order

The question you be asking is what is the best SCHOOL for your son. It might not even be a prep school based on his intelligence, work ethic, maturity, ability to live away from home etc.

It depends on whether or not the boy plays for an Academy team. All the ISL schools have sports requirements. If your son plays on an Academy team and wants to continue, then he will have to choose carefully.

When you have answers to the Academy question and the ISEE question, you may find that you only have one or two to choose from.

What generally serves a student better and/or a student who is an athlete? Being one of top 5 students out of a high school class of 350-500 versus top half or top third of an ISL or similar? Put another way, any advantages to staying public other than the savings of 50K a year for 4-5 years that nobody on TS seems to have to pay?

Go ISL if you want an fantastic experience, elite peer group (socially, athletically, academically), and better college preparedness. If you can afford it or are given the option to afford it, hard to turn it down.
But, if all you want is college admission advantage, then stay Public. Class rank matters. Given same test scores and other qualifications (soccer) the one in 2nd percentile of Public HS has distinct advantage over the one in 2nd decile/quartile of ISL school.
