Dear Parents of Kids in the Highest Brackets at Local Showcase Tournaments

Ok so I guess when your son is playing NPL you should expect to be in the top bracket on the most centrally located fields. Do you parents out there of kids playing in GPS March Madness or NEFC Pre-Season have an expectation like I do that your kid will at least be seen by some sort of coaches? Just realized my two boys (different ages) will be playing without any exposure and I'm honestly thinking about having them sit out because college coaches only care about the Development Academy. No point in suffering in the cold for nothing. Which is an insane statement because I paid for this crap (twice). How are we allowing ourselves to get screwed by these clubs that don't have a DA program????

    Obviously a troll...but...whatever...

If I suggested to my kid that she sits out because it's cold, she'd have a fit.

Maybe your two boys outta' grow a sack.

Huh? This is a very complicated and nuanced issue.

NPL is basically C team territory these days. That's best case scenario. Maybe they grab a few kids from NPL but that's about it. Even then you better be enrolled at Rivers, BB&N or Nobles if you want to crack D3.

My kids have been scouted at all sorts of playing situations that include tournaments, high school games, friendlies, inter club scrimmages, and even practices and private workouts. The issue has never been the venue, it was always whether or not they were good enough to play at a specific college level. If you target your programs properly none of this is an issue at all so you can cease with the petty charades.

We've always lucked out with coaches randomly appearing at obscure locations to watch our kids. It's how soccer works.

Nothing random about it all. In fact quite the opposite. Have to know exactly where your kid fits and work real hard before the event to get the coach there. It's hard work which is why lazy parents seem to like the idea that all they need to do is send their kid to showcase and poof scholarship offers drop out of the sky.

General rule of thumb is the better the league, the better the team, the better chance your kid has of getting better exposure.

Regardless, it all depends on your soccer goals.

In this environment today this is basically a wives tale because the teams are all so watered down. Not uncommon at all to have kids who won't play in college on high level teams and then have kids who will be studs in college on relatively unheralded ones. A lot of that has to do with personal choices made very early in the game and whether or not clubs kept families happy over the years. The bottom line is there are a lot of choices out there and not everyone makes the same ones so this little formula above no longer applies.

You are partially correct. It is highly uncommon for 'studs' to be on crappy teams, chances are they are not studs. The 'my kid scored 30 goals last season' is seen through by coaches. You are right that many kids on top teams do not play in college. So you are half right!

My daughter is playing in college now on a D1 team. Her recruiting year had kids going D1 from a broad spectrum of teams and some were on relatively poor teams though I wouldn't exactly call them crappy. During her time in club soccer there was a lot of transition in the environment so it wasn't all that uncommon to see fairly good players on some fairly weak teams. My point was that this idea that you have to be on a top level team to get recruited is really a myth largely perpetuated by the ECNL clubs to justify travelling all over the country. In the end if your kid actually did score 30 goals for their club team and then did it again for her high school team the college coaches won't care as much about the level as they will her composure in front of the net. True goal scorers are cherished because they are hard to find.

That may have been the case in the days of Maple, but not today. I defy anyone who currently plays D1 college soccer who played on a club team league lower than ECNL, DAP or NPL. Name one.
