    Something to think about

This story about teen athletes getting hooked on opioids struck a nerve - on of my athletes needed surgery to repair a bad break last year. They prescribed 60 oxy with 2 refills! We only filled ten and she didn't even take them a. But docs hand out scripts like they're Skittles

You are incorrect. Bad docs hand out narcotics like they are skittles. Their opinion is not to be trusted.

Narcotic have not been written for years with refills. It will require a new prescription each time.

I know it caries by state. Besides it's easily solved - they just write a bigger script. OP said his kid had 60. That's way too many for a teen and can always get renewed if need be. All that cr** is highly addictive and teens (and plenty of adults) easily get into trouble. They wanted to give my kid oxy for getting his wisdom teeth out for christ sake. My wife refused and asked for something else.

What if it wasn't a doctor??? Doctors are not the only ones handing out prescriptions.
But yes....whoever prescribed narcotics for post-concussive syndrome has not read recent literature i.e. over the last number of years that do not even list narcotics as one of the medical therapies after concussion.

That said, you are unaware if you don't think that kids get prescribed narcotics for pain in certain settings.

A bigger problem with the kid described is that he continued to play after the first, second, third, and fourth concussion contributing toward a chronic problem.

Agreed with the kid with concussion - at what point does a parent say enough already? Friends had their kid stop playing after the 2nd one. Not concussion protocol either.

We also had an oral surgeon prescribe opioids for our college kid's wisdom teeth extraction. I guess Tylenol 3 with a little codeine isn't good enough any more? And we live in a "nice" suburban town and there have been more than a few cases of adults getting hooked on the stuff.

The concussion issue is not black and white. Why was he not in a concussion protocol if he had a concussion?

                1. Regarding concussion, ultimately the school and the parent do or don't follow regulations. This may or may not have anything to do with the doctor......if, in fact a doctor was consulted for the concussion......which is not a requirement.

                2. At the risk of sounding like an ass, that statement above about Tylenol/codeine vs. other narcotics is from a lack of knowledge. T-3s, dilaudid, morphine are somewhat equivocal. each mg may have a different potency, but prescriptions of one can be equal to a prescription of another. There are some narcotics that lend themselves toward addition compared to others.

                3. Whoever prescribed narcotics for a concussion was not following any protocol.
