First time doing this. Maybe some more informed parents can clue us in. After a college expresses interest what happens from there? What if multiple schools are expressing interest at the same time? Or if the school expressing interest is not your first choice and your still waiting to hear from your first choice?

There is a big difference between expressing interest and making an offer. Keep them talking until you get offers, and keep pursuing those schools player is interested in that have not shown interest. You should be able to buy some time before responding to an offer to find out what other schools will do. -

Your son/daughter is going to have to figure out what makes sense based on $s, team level-aka will he/she play, academic interests, etc. This is not an easy process and good luck.Comment

Interest, Likely Letters, and Official Offers are not the same thing. If you are getting interest, Congratulations. It really is a dating game. Keep your options open and realize that while everyone is being super nice, Coaches want to land players as cheaply as possible. Enjoy the show and the interest. When the time is right, there is nothing wrong with asking where you stand, how much influence/control the coach has, and what type of supportyou should expect Don't start there tho.Originally posted by Unregistered View Post

As good as it feels, don't push for an offer until you are at that stage with all the schools your child is really interested in are. Once you start getting offers the clock starts with them and you'll likely to find yourself whether the bird in the hand is better than one in the bush. Take everything you hear from college college coaches with a grain of salt, and don't get too worked up one way or the other until you actually get to the point of talking commitment and numbers. Keep in mind that the coach may not even be there once your child goes to college. Coaches get fired and coaches resign to take better opportunities. Remember it is a courting exercise and do not forget what you used to do when you were courting an interest (in other words, you would say what you believed the other wanted to hear, whether it was 100% true or not).Originally posted by Unregistered View PostComment

Agree with post above. Once an agreement is reached the athlete should tell all the other coaches he/she has been talking with that they've reached a decision (making sure not to burn any bridges. Whether it's D1 D2 or D3 everything is verbal - most coaches will keep their word but they can still rescind anytime. So can your kid, but it better be for a really good reason. But with D1 or D2 once you sign a LOI February 1st then it's more binding (but things can happen). D3 has no such formal commitmentOriginally posted by Unregistered View PostComment

These guys at Develop Your College Game Plan may be able to offer advice. They did a presentation for ODP parents last year on the recruiting and financial aid process which I found very informative. My D only in 6th grade, so I'm not in recruiting process yet. One of their daughters played soccer at HC and the other was a basketball recruit, maybe at URI, so they've been through the process. I have not used them and don't know what they change for services, but certainly worth a call to them to find out. They are local to MA.

Will assume this is a real person looking for information.
Interest as in a sophomore/junior got an email passed through her/his coach after a recent event saying essentially, "we saw you play and you are awesome give us a call if you are interested in going to school at our super U". Cell number included.
Kid makes call. Talks to coach. Likes coach. Coach invites kid to unofficial visit. Kid schedules such visit (here I recommend only visiting at this point if no real expense is required to attend the visit. If there is a flight and multiple days off required only visit after they have see the kid enough to be ready to make an offer at the visit)
Attend visit wait for offer or get offer at visit. This happens oftentimes with several schools at the same time. Don't be surprised if at the visit the coach says we need to see you play more before we make an offer.Comment

Dilemma here. My daughters first choice of college finished recruiting her grad year so we moved on and she committed(verbally) to her second choice. A very good package and has developed a pretty good relationship with the coaching staff. Now the dilemma ....the coach of her first choice just got fired. I know most schools will honor verbal commits but I'm sure not all will stay committed. Conversely the new coach might have his or her own list of recruits and existing players might want to transfer. This is a long way to go to ask if anyone has had any experience with this or advice how to handle this without even knowing who the new coach will be. I know this is premature but showcases start this weekend and I'm walking a tightrope of the safe versus the unpredictable. I know she'd be happy with her second choice but her "dream school" might be an option again albeit a risky bet. These are both D1 schools.Comment
